The event Ben had with the smoke monster demonstrated that the monster is either something alien to earth or something devine. The monster can take on the appearence of a person such as Christian Shepard, Horace Goodspeed, or Alex. The mystery surronding why Riochard never ages is because it is not Richard, it is the smoke monster disquised as Richard. This also would mean that Jon Locke is dead and we are seeing the smoke monster as John Locke.

one thing though. As Aun and Frank are on the island, they are greated by Christian. While back on the other island, John Locke is setting next to Ben....so, smokie can be in two places at once ? on two different islands ?

So the smoke monster can take on the appearance of 2 or more people at the same time i.e Locke and Alex.
Or maybe it just changed from Locke to Alex and then back to Locke again.
Not a bad theory though.

I think that just one at a time.... never have you seen, Alex, Locke and Smokie at the same time.........

Maybe smokie took on Christian's appearance and then travelled to the other island to appear as Locke, and then back again.
Cos Locke eventually appeared to Ilana after the crash,no-one saw him get out of the coffin. Then he disappeared again til we saw him speak to Caesar, then later we saw him sitting waiting for Ben to wake up.
Seems like a lot of extra work for a security system.
Mind you if Smokie is Christian and Locke, then what happened to their dead bodies?
When Jack opened his father's coffin,it was empty.

just if smokie is Locke and Christian, I'll say that there dead bodies are the ones smokie is using.....

I don't think Richard is Smokie - if that was the case, why does Ben have to "summon" him? Why not just go to Richard?
I see two possibilities with Richard.
1 - He is ageless.
2 - He died and the island resurrected him - like Locke and Christian. You aren't really alive, but you aren't quite dead either.

I would really hate it if Locke turned out to be smokie. He just doesn't seem to be like the rest of the dead we've seen at all. He's just a bit more confident now, and has learned from his mistakes and to take anything Ben says with a bucket of salt.
As for Richard, though, I think he could be. Ben clearly doesn't know what smokie actually is, and can't control it; he just knows what it does. It's certainly possible that noone knows if Richard is smokie.
As far as appearing in two places at once goes, I heard somewhere that the ancient Egyptions believed it could be done, but I don't recall all the details.

I'll go with what we humans think of as 'devine' which in Lost could be alien....the runes Ben saw with a smoke monster communicating with an Egyptian god....well, there is the alien connection to earth civilization...just a thought...

So let me get this straight. The smoke monster is everyone and everyone is Jacob? That doesn't leave much on the island. But it does connect smokie and Jacob which is what I said. They are part of the same whole. Yin and yang.

I like that thought Glaurung. The most ancient mythology we have record of, through stone carvings, is Sumerian. I think, according to them, a superior alien race - the Annunaki - created humans through genetically engineering a cross between themselves and various existing Earth species, in order to do the labour and dig for gold to save their dying planet. Or something like that.

That's one interpretation, popularized by Zechariah Sitchin. The Sumerian tablets aren't quite so explicit about where the Annunaki came from. They just say they came from "on high", which other theorists have suggested referred to the mountains to the east and northeast of Sumeria. Whatever the case, the Sumerians talk about them as if they were real beings who interacted daily with humans, rather than distant deities like the Greek Olympians, or legendary figures from some vague and remote past.

so if richard is dead, when did he die? Notice he always has a sort of more modern look to his clothes, except the one flashback with young ben when he had long hair and tattered clothes. last episode he was the only hostile wearing a modern button down shirt.

How would Smokie leave the Island? We saw Richard recruiting Juliet off the Island. If he wasn't Smokie then, what killed him and why didn't he age 1954-2001?

That'd make no sense. If the smoke monster is Locke, then why would it even care to tell Ben he should stop trying to kill Locke?
I guess it would be pretty hard to kill the monster. Just a thought.
Richard being the monster sound plausible, but not Locke.

hmm.. I don't think so. I'm still a firm believer that Richard is just time traveling, and that's why he's always in exactly the right place, at exactly the right time because he already knows where he needs to be, and why he also never ages. I just don't think that smokie is richard, or jacob.
I've thought all along that Richard, Jacob, the monster and the Island are on the same wavelength. Are they all the same being? If they aren't, are 3 of them protecting 1? Maybe the Island needs protecting. Maybe Jacob needs protecting. The Smoke Monster presents a great oppurtunity to develop as an Anti Hero. Doing awful things to protect the Island for good.

I do think Richard COULD be dead, the same way Locke is, and possibly Claire. But I don't think he's the smoke monster, I think that's still a separate thing, and even Ben said he didn't exactly know what it was. But if Richard were dead, then how could he visit Locke when he was a kid? Surely if the same was happening to Locke, if he left the island he would be back to being dead? I don't know anymore! :D

Agreed.
If Richard is smokie, then who guards the island when he is off to interview little Locke and to recruit Juliet?
