What to make of all these literary figures?

What are we to make of all these literary figures included in the show, C.S. Lewis, John Locke, Sawyer-possibly Tom Sawyer- and Austen-possibly jane austen-. Thats all i could think of there maybe more, but is this just the writers throwing more crap out there for us to chew on or what?
