ok. i am watching the re-air of "the economist" with the subtitle facts. The freighter is 80 nautical miles from the island. So if anybody can do this kind of math try to to figure out if farther away means bigger difference.

Just did a search on internet (80 nautical miles) and got this, so not anything to do with Lost, but so close to home cause this is where I live... funny how things link together

Ten sailors whose yacht overturned 80 nautical miles (145km) east of Dunedin shortly after 1pm today (18 January 2008) have all been rescued and have now landed safely at Taieri Airfield.

There is another thread
why is the freighter 80 nautical miles away?
you might want answers from there.

Question for Navyguy

I presume you are in the navy. I'm wanting to know if there is a relevance to 80NM with regards to distance with communication?
if the producers of lost have done their research there might be an answer there. I'm not sure if there is a limit with how far away you are from land before you can't transmit or receive signal.
My other thought is the 80NM distance could be a clue to where the island is? I'm hoping it's to do with communication.

My other thought is to do with the electrical storm and having to be 80NM away from the island cause that is where the storm is. But then there is the plane that drops the food/boxes so that would defeat that answer... unless there is a window of opportunity to bipass the storm to enter into the Island Zone. I hope what I'm saying makes sense.

80 N Miles seems pretty far for a typical helicopter. I did a quick google on a common Bell copter (looks like the one on Lost), and a rountrip of 160 NM would be a bit risky in my opinion. Especially if you plan on doing some exploring.

Bell 212 (http://www.aoc.noaa.gov/aircraft_bell.htm)
Range (normal): 225 Nautical miles ~2.3 hours @100 knots
Range (w/aux. fuel): 375 Nautical miles ~3.5 hours @100 knots

speaking of the copter, did any1 else think it looked like a bit of a "clunker" like i am no expert on copters infact i know noth but it seemed like an old machine to me. something like from the 1970's. any1 up to speed with helicopter models??

Someone posted all the info on it in a thread.. Can't remember the thread title.. But if I remember correctly it is from the 70's.

hmm why would a group so sophisticated and rich as the team put on the island, have a helicopter from the 70's??? unless they are from the 70's hmmm

why is the ship 80 NM away anyway? 80 NM is far. wouldn't it move closer to the island to assist the helicopter flight? something must be keeping it that far away.
