View Full Version : Daniel Faraday and the cards
was that scene to show us that his short term memory is shot...or that he has some sort of psychic ability? I think it was about his memory bc 2 out of 3 is not too shabby as far as psychic ability goes.

Yeah, I didn't really "get" that scene, but Charlotte definitely asked him something about remembering the cards, not predicting them.

Yeah looks like something traumatic may have happened to Dan which caused him to lose his memory somehow.....remember back when he was watching the news and started freaking out and the woman asked him what was wrong....he said he didn't know. Thats probably because he couldn't remember. Charlotte says he's progressing so maybe it will start to come back and we find out he knows A LOT....perhaps someone erased his mind because he knew things he shouldn't??? Oh geez now my mind is going sci-fi....yikes

they all seem to rememeber everything about everyone on the island - maybe he lost his memory and they working on getting it back.
I must be psychic because even *I* knew he would not get all 3 right - LOL

right but he's not the pyschic I think that threw a lot of people off... I think he just doesn't have any memory. And I agree that's prolly why he was freaking out-also why he seems so disheveled and awkward in the first couple episodes. Maybe Charlotte's the only one who knows this and that's why he says he wants to stay w/ her at end of episode 3 (???) At the time I thought that comment was a little odd. maybe that's why.

My guess is that Dharma is checking for "special" people, so it seems more like an ESP thing to me. But I think it also had to do with showing us the cards themselves, which had Dharma symbols on the back so we now know at least Dan and Charlotte ARE with Dharma.

Why would showing cards with Dharma symbols show that Dan and Charlotte are with Dharma? Pretty much everything on the island has Dharma symbols on it.

Maybe the island is draining him and the thing with the cards is a way to boost his brain back up...I like the comment about them maybe being with DARMA because of the cards...

We don't know if he actually saw them with his eyes. She may have looked at them and he was trying to get them from her mind. He may Receive and she may Send. We don't know yet.

His short term memory is shot. He already got to look at the cards before they were turned over. Then when he went to repeat the suits and numbers back he couldn't remember. And not only that but he was way off on the last one.

i am going with the short term memory loss - which goes with why he cant remember why the wreckage of oceanic upset him and the fact that frank reminded him about hanging up the phone, and why he was so spacy when they asked him his name etc....

Agreed...which makes you wonder why of all people they picked him to go to the island. Just seems like too much trouble unless he's unique to the point that only he could fill the role...which I'm assuming that he is.

The cards probably came to the beach camp from the swan station. Perhaps Charlotte realizes what the symbol means but to Daniel, they are just cards.

I belive it is short term memory loss it would explain why he was upset about the plane crash and had no idea why also why he would need a care taker in the first place. Something happened in his past to make him either loose his memory or block it some how and made him need someone there to take care of him. Many of you are probally wondering where I'm getting Caretaker from. The eposide that was enhanced the first time with daniel watching the plane crash it said it was his caretaker in the secne.

I think Dan's memory of moments he has already lived and is now reliving has been damaged likley due to travel thro' the wormhole when he makes his trips back and forth to the island. I think they have all been back and forth but each time they get back to a slightly different space-time place and the present remains relative not only to the individuals but to the island itself

Well they've only been there this one time as far as we know. Do you have a theory on their multiple trips?

The entire show is the story of resolution. With the removal of the time-space constant, all of life operates on a much more basic premis, "the present". All of the char. in the various story lines are in fact related to a real truth represented in the show buy the few absolutes.

i agree with all of u that feel that Daniel's short term memory is screwed......he was visably upset re the crash site found but didn't know why and he sucks big time at the little card memory game......at first i thought that he was an idiosavant......but i think that something very traumatic has messed him up ....he still has his gift for science but can't do simple things....poor guy....i think that we need flashbacks with him...man im waiting to see if we can fit this puzzle 2gether:)

I am leaning towards a memory test. It looks a lot the old 3 card Monte street con. If he was somehow "reading" the cards she would just deal them one by one face down. It is just another of a series of test that Miles wants to perform measuring the effects of whatever they passed on the way to the island.

No he saw the cards before and then they were turned over and he forgot what they were.

i gotta re-watch that. thats kinda how 3 card Monte works. "where she goes nobody knows". Only in 3 card you shuffle, then lift & reinsert the queen.

maybe Dan and Charlotte know/suspect the island has 'healing' powers, and they're using Dan's memory loss as a test case? they both wanted to stay behind for some reason.
jacksnurse

possibly yes...but i really think that his memory is shot as we have said and that they are staying back to test out some of their theories on the island

Doesn't anyone make the connection between the card scene and the rocket scene where it showed up significantly late to Daniel's position?
Perhaps that card "game" was only one in a series of card games (others not shown) where they were trying to predict the future cards or something.
I think Daniel is testing theories - although it is easily just as plausible he has short-term memory loss.
Daniel is a physicist - so am I. Short-term memory loss is deadly in that field; I can't imagine him being a successful one if he has that problem.

I agree that she was testing his memory. She clearly says what do you remember. But it still bugs me how casual and uncaring Charlotte and Dan are about their dire situation.

I was thinking the same thing about Lapidus.. He's up in a helicopter with a dead body and two armed survivors and he doesn't seem to mind at all.

yeah, they just seem to be happy where they are. even miles in the chair said I'm right where i want to be. Though it looked like he changed his mind a bit when he got the grenade in his mouth!
