View Full Version : "it's not an island"

I'm still torn whether the island is based on science or faith. Clearly we have science grounded stuff like the Orchid, Swan, Dharma, etc. but then we also have faith-based stuff that science can't explain like Richard's lack of aging, smokie, the temple, reincarnation/animation (Christian, Locke, Horace, Walt), etc.
So I'm torn as to how the island can be both science and faith-based. The two would seem to be incompatible with each other and yet they are on the island side by side. I'm reminded of Angels & Demons and how science and faith were portrayed as compatible and incompatible at the same time as well.
So which is it? I lean toward faith but that's just me.

It's ten to one spiritual. The science part is miniscule by comparison.
I don't like the word faith. It doesn't make any difference at all what you believe, IMHO. What is, is. Believe it or not.
The island is an anomoly that some try to understand/manipulate scientifically, but it's ultimately a spiritual anomoly, not a scientific one.

Im going to have to disagree. From what we saw from the lamp post, the island has always been moving through space and time- thats pretty damn scientific to me.

From Lostpedia:
The real-life Dr. Richard Alpert (aka Ram Dass) is a noted psychologist and Hindu spiritualist. In 1963, he was dismissed from Harvard University for his research (in collaboration with Timothy Leary, Aldous Huxley, Allen Ginsberg and others) into psilocybin, LSD-25, and other psychedelic chemicals. He later traveled to India, where he was given his Hindu spiritual name "Ram Dass", which translates as "Servant of God". Alpert wrote of his experiences in an unusual tome entitled Be Here Now, and founded the Hanuman Foundation. See Bio and Wikipedia entry. Damon Lindelof confirmed that the character of Alpert was indeed named after a famous person.

Ram Dass is a spirtual teacher. This is a spiritual show. The more I read about it, the more sure I am.
I knew it (intuition) right away when the crazy woman said "OTHERS" like it was a ghastly thing.
(I was only a fan of the show for the last year, and didn't do any extracurricular stuff till the last few weeks).
The science stuff isn't nonsensical, IMHO, just impossible.

The more I delve into the show, the more certain I am of my original conviction that it's a spiritual show. The science stuff is nonsense, IMHO.
You know, you really have big ones to say that science is nonsense. If it weren't for science, you wouldn't be watching Lost on television. Do you really think you understand who Ram Dass is and what he believes and represents? I don't think you have a clue.

Ok we need to settle down the rivalry. I think the show is a mix of both. Its quite evident. There are many occassions where both come into play. Science is a big part of this seasons....but I think the show is about both. I really hate reading opinions of homeresque views where a person favours the other over the other it just leads to biased opinions.
I feel that faith coupled with science is what makes the Island special. They both co-exist and make each other stronger. It is like a mutualistic relationship among symbiosis. The science opens up your mind in order to accept faith more strongly and believe in things, allowing them to be possible. The island is only made possibly based on their cooperation.

You know, you really have big ones to say that science is nonsense.I edited my post. It's impossible. Not nonsense. I have almost never seen a science fiction story that tries to alter reality with scientific fantasy, that doesn't end up being stupid.

Oh, well, of course. How silly of me. I understand now. You know more than Einstein, Hawking, Bohr, Minkowski, and all the rest. Yes, yes, of course. So, now science is just impossible and not nonsense? ROFLMAO!!!!! OMG!!!!

So, now science is just impossible and not nonsense? ROFLMAO!!!!! OMG!!!!No. Scientifically making rabbits travel through time is nonsense. Getting hyper about it, trying to understand how it could theoretically happen, to me, is silly, because it can't.
Science is fabulously beyond me, hyperbrilliant, and the inspiration for new discovery is the greatest attribute any person can have.
For me though, entertainment and science don't mix well, scientists aren't entertaining, or somehow science does not translate to entertainment (well).
Sorry if my language insinuated a disrepect for science, I have total respect for science, reverence for even the fact that we can type messages over this medium blows my mind and I bow at the feet of the inventors.

Well then, that's better. You really need to keep an open mind. Check this out....a few months ago a scientist in England invented a nanocloaking device that actually worked! He actually cloaked a nanosized particle. Now you see it....now you don't. Don't say time travel is impossible. Nothing is impossible as long as we try.

I think time travel IS impossible, because I have a spiritual knowledge, experientially, I know for a fact, that it is ALWAYS right now. Nothing exists ever anywhere outside of now.
I really was a black hole, and it really helped me for you to describe it the way you did. Thanks.
