When Dan returned to Dharma in '77 how did he know that his mother was a hostile? It would seem that very few people off of the island know about it's existence, even fewer probably know about the others, so how could Dan figure out where she was?
This is a crazy idea... Seen as how Dan had previously been experimenting with time travel could he have spent his three years off the island continuing his experiments, and hopping around time? Possibly observing and figuring things out, like the exact time that Chang was going to walk out of the Orchid.....
