Dan stated that there are Variables in the time line in the last episode and before he told Des that he had to find a constant, this got me thinking...

So we have the variables, people that can change the course of events.

And we have the constants, the things that stay the same (what ever happened, happened)

So what if certain people are the variables and others the constants. for example Des saved Charlie life more than once proving he is a variable, but as Eloise put it the universe has a way of course correcting. Charlie was a constant, he had to die. I guess Dan was a constant too that's why his mom sent him back to the island.

(Sorry if this is confusing)

technically charlie, dan and the man in red shoes didn't know exactly the future whether or not it was a vision like des or previously living it like eloise. I think to be a variable you have to know the future. Dan didn't and thought he could change things but ended up doing WHH because he didn't know exactly what he did in 1977. Desmond got the visions of charlie and could change the time of charlies death by rescuing him until it was most benefitial. The course correction are fixes of things that the variables change like you said charlie had to die so his death is a constant.
Ramblings over I think I agree with you.

BUT... if Charlie really was something Des could manipulate and Charlie didn't have to die in the Looking Glass... who would have went?

I have trouble seeing anyone not die in the Looking Glass -- esp with Patchy going there.

Turning off the signal is a pretty major thing, so we "know" it was meant to be done... but how if not by Charlie?

You're right what we are seeing right now is because charlie was able to turn off the looking glass. If desmond let charlie get struck by lighting none of this would have happened. So that is a great point but time travel wise If desmond made charlie do the looking glass thing and then they went back and faraday got shot by his mother in 1977 wouldn't faraday have always gotten shot by his mother in 1977 onwards until 2004 desmond had to make the charlie desicion again. I don't see the different timelines stuff it's one street if you go back on that street that is what happened at that point in the street all the way to the future. I'm actually arguing the other side of this in a different thread so don't hold me to this to much.

Yes, Faraday was 'always' shot by Hawking. Nothing has changed. Everything we are seeing in 1977 already happened by the time they arrive in the 2000's. If Jack (I think it was Jack who was held in the rec room by the others), he'd have seen himself in the group 1977 picture.

Sayid always shot Ben. Kate always took Ben to Richard...etc.

Time is linear in our perception of it... but that doesn't mean it's the only way it 'happens'.

man this **** was some much easier when it was just WHH.
