Another post was talking about this episode, so I rewatched it.
When Keamy opened the secondary protocol did you noticed it had a D.I logo
on the front cover? Widmore gave it to them. Is Widmore (and Hawkings[since shes at a D.I lampost]) both now working for the D.I?
Are these two working together?
--The secondary protocol had furture events in it(dan's jouranl had future events). It is how Keamy knew he'd find Ben at the Orchid station. Does the D.I know the future?
--Charlotte knew about the mystery well that Locke went down...did Chang and D.I in the 70's use it and traveled through time..the reason for building the Orchid around it? Did they give their time travel experiences to Ann Arbor?
--sidenote--Keamy was asked how Widmore knew the future and he states:
She's a very smart man? lol
--Locke's scar switches to his left eye when speaking with Horace in a dream.

-I don't think it's for sure that the 'secondary protocol' was a record of future events (though I reckon it would be), is it? It might have just said where the Orchid was, how to find the secret door, that this is the place Ben would likely go to, etc...?
I wonder, why if it had such great info in it, was it not available for them to refer to right from the get-go?
-I think Charlotte was probably going through the same kind of conscious time-traveling as Des, rat-Eloise, Minkowski, etc. I don't think she would have had access to any 'secondary protocol'-like information.

---How did Widmore get his hands on the D.I secondary protocol?
--How would widmore/D.I know where Ben might go..unless Ben himself decided to use the D.I second protocol.(protocol is like a rulebook) Ben still in D.I? still uses their protocols?
-I think the same about charlotte, but she was only on island from 70-77, so the well must have been there in that time. Was Chang/D.I using the well? Were they time traveling? or did they just want to study and use its energy?

Ben going to the Orchid is rather easy to predict. Ben can't fend off the mercs, so he's got to use the Island's only real 'defense' and move it. That means... going the Orchid.
I'm guessing Widmore is now part of DI.
I find most interesting about the well... is why was it dug? No doubt that reason is someone stumbled over the rope sticking out of the ground and... so they dug to see what the deal was. Yep, Locke using the well is why the well was first dug. Think about it.. they were rather high up on the mountain.. not exactly a place to find water!

there is a chance widmore is in cahoots with DI or thinks he is.
however, it could be that widmore & co have just taken over and using old DI things - the lampost, the manual etc. in the same way ben uses DI things on the island.

I want to think that the DI is dead and gone, but if so then why was there a pallet of food air dropped in at the swan in season 2?

I think in the near future you will see a partnership form between the Others and the DI out of necessity after "the Incident" for the preservation of the Island and humanity. After "the merge", the Others gradually take over the operations of the DI both on and off the island, and after the DI continues it's experiments in time travel they are disposed of through the purge (ordered by either Widmore or Jakob, I tend to think Widmore as he is exploiting the island to build his life off of it). the only site that is kept staffed is the Swan (with DI members that don't know of the purge) to keep the world from imploding (that's the only reason why I can think of the supply drops still working). I think Widmore was banished by Jakob for exploiting the island (perhaps using time travel to create his wealth) and so he can never come back. Ben could come back because he was never banished, he (and Locke) just misinterpreted Jakobs command as to who had to turn the wheel.
Sorry about being long winded, and I could be COMPLETELY wrong!

You make some good points. There has been this crossover between the DI and the Others surfacing for a while now. I think that Ben may be working for them. BTW, the Others manned more stations that just the Swan.

I think the back story to Widmore's wealth may be traced to D.I. They may have paid him a lot of money to reveal what secrets lie on the island.
