Ok so I looked to see if this was mentioned elsewhere. (A little)
What benefit could there possibly be to anyone concerned if Faraday sets off a hydrogen bomb on the Island? Everybody dies, the DI, the Others, the Losties, everybody. Including the love of his life, Charlotte. The Island becomes a radio active cinder, who knows what effect the explosion has on the exotic matter? It just doesn't seem to make sense to me.

I think if it's gonna blow up the swan electomagnetic pocket it would impolde like the hatch maybe so everyone might not die. If they blew up the island like to pieces they would all die but it would mean that nothing we know to have happened would happen. 815 couldn't crash because they blew the island to hell desmond couldn't land their they don't need to press the button.
it would make it all never happen it wouldn't matter that they died because everybody would keep living their pre 815 crash life and never end up on the island to die in the first place. BAsically I think it would erase all the effects the island had on these people's lives.

I've been pondering that too. I think Ellie shot Dan because she may have overheard him mention the hydrogen bomb and she put 1 plus 1 together. Those tents aren't soundproof.

Everyone in *this* reality will die, however, Oceanic flight 815 will not crash and Jack, Kate, Sawyer, Hurley, et al will never crash on the Island and *that* version of reality will be fine.
of course if they don't crash then they don't blow up the h-bomb so they do crash.. ah what the heck who knows?!

Exactly if they blow it up then the hatch will also be blown up. With the hatch blown up they will never be pulled to the island. They will baically erase the past.

The hatch hasn't been built yet, has it? I don't think so. At this point they are just still digging for the foundation and where it will be. The problem is the EM pocket. I think they will try to destroy the EM with the h-bomb, onlt to have it implode rather than explode, but still contaminate the area with radiation. That is why the Swan had a "cement basement" and the radiation accounts for the cancer cures and fertility issues. But, that is too easy. That has been laid out before us already in the bits and pieces and clues. We will be left with our jaws dropped open as we see no island left at the end of this season......but...........TCC.

Speaking of h-bombs and exploding hatches. When the hatch was beginning to implode at the end of season 2 Desmond crawled under control room and turned the fail safe key.
Turning the key imploded the hatch and saved everyone. Did that key maybe detonate some sort of h-bomb (maybe even jughead) to stop the overload...

I think Daniel was hoping that at least Charlotte would leave before he would potentialy destroy the island or at least the Swan with jughead, and thus there would be no reason for her to go back. As for the rest of them, they would either be a sacrifice, or he thought that the future would change and they'd go back to living their lives before the island and without the island.
What he doesn't understand is that if the past was changed, nobody in the future would notice it because for them it had always happened that way. It doesn't make sense for things to suddenly pop in and out of existance in the "present"(as we percieve it) if it was destroyed, prevented, or created in the past.

I was wondering the same thing, Nots, but didn't we see them hammering the numbers into the doors? I don't claim to know a lot but I do know construction! Why would they be worrying about the doors if they hadn't built the basic structure yet? Then again, if they were going to drill into the electromagnetic pocket of energy, they must still be in the construction phase. Grrrrr..... This show drives me batty!!

But if they use the h-bomb to destroy the negative energy, then the Swan doesn't have any electromagnetic attributes. It will just be a cement wall to cover up radiation.
It doesn't matter if they haven't finished building the station yet. The real stuff is in that energy, which Dan wanted to destroy.

Another thing worth mentioning is that Dan said,"if what I am trying to do works".
He doesn't know for sure if it will work or not.
He is doing an experiment really, just like when he was knocking on the hatch door to speak to Desmond. He wasn't sure it would work and was hoping it would saying,"please let this work, please".

Perhaps the EMP (Electromagnetis Pulse) of the bomb will affect the magnetic core.
The term electromagnetic pulse (sometimes abbreviated EMP) has the following meanings:
1. A burst of electromagnetic radiation from an explosion (especially a nuclear explosion) or a suddenly fluctuating magnetic field. The resulting electric and magnetic fields may couple with electrical/electronic systems to produce damaging current and voltage surges.
2. A broadband, high-intensity, short-duration burst of electromagnetic energy.
Apparently magnetic field strength and location can affect the damage done by an EMP.

Jughead cannot go nuclear. There is a crack in it leaking radiation. This means when it is detonated, it cannot reach critical mass. It will, however, explode and spread radio active dust everywhere. It a dirty bomb now.
If it is filled with lead like Dan told RA to do in '54, the bomb wont explode at all.

I could be wrong here. But I don't see how a crack in Jughead would make it inoperable. The casing of a H-Bomb just protects the people around it from the inherit radiation of the internal components. As long as the fission bomb and fusion cell are intact and working the thing will work fine regardless of a crack in the casing.
If the fission bomb detonates and does not properly trigger the process of the fusion cell then you will get a "dirty bomb".
All the radiation leak means is that whoever makes Jughead go boom boom will probably get radiation poisoning before they are vaporized.
Not to be too picky but thermonuclear weapons (h-bombs) don't have a critical mass... that's an A-bomb.

yea. your correct, but my point still stands. Any broken part of a bomb of this type will fail to chain react.

IMO, if the Jughead could blow up, it would of blown up already. Someone dropped the bomb on the island right? So to me it only makes sense that the island is keeping it from blowing up. Remember how Michael couldn't kill himself on the freighter boat? The island just won't let certain things happen. The Jughead blowing up is one of them. So whatever Jack does, that bomb ain't ever going off.

Jughead was never dropped on the island. It was hanging from a gantry being set up for testing. No one had tried to detonate it, or drop it, it was just chilling waiting for someone to make it go KaPlowee
