Is it possible that Dan is the reason Desmond is on the island at all?
He gets shot,Ellie sees his notebook,reads it,and believes the whatever happens happens,thus sets out to follow as much as she can from the book,tell Des he has to leave Penny,sending Dan to the Island,etc. Maybe he is the reason he gets shot! It makes sense in my head,however reading it back doesn't,haha! I mean if she believes all that is written in the book,and he is dead,he can't explain the variables,things can change etc,etc,so she chooses to believe what is written and follows the course set out,its a viscious circle to be in,I don't know if this reads well,I've had a rough weekend on the booze and this is possibly just rambling!

I believe Jack and Kate have the notebook as a way of figuring what to do to get out of 1977, because they shouldn't be there.

I don't think Desmond is part of anything yet, hopefully a rescue mission with Penny to save everybody in the present; plus it would be nice should the 77ers get back to the present for the save.

Desmond was Daniel's constant, but I think that's over unless more skipping through time occurs where specific info that could save Dan can be passed along. The fact Dan's mom is a stone cold bitch that never let him pursue being a top notch pianist isn't going to be enough. Also, Dan was lacking some common sense which got him killed. You don't go prancing into enemy territory with demands by yourself and outnumbered.

I'm also surprised Dan didn't get the letter from Marty telling him to wear a bullet-proof vest because he would be shot and killed later in life.

Come to think of it, you might be on to something....So she gets a good look at that book and somewhere in there it says "If anything goes wrong,Desmond Hume is my constant" and who knows what else it says about Des....From that info she maybe left the island and tracked down Des and they started watching him.. They(Ellie,widmore,whoever) may have even initiated the first meeting at the monastery between Penny and Des..If for nothing else just to keep tabs on Des
