there seems to have been no other consequences to letting the clock in the hatch run down.... they just kind of dropped that whole plot line like a hot potato... am i missing something here?

Maybe the implosion of the station did something?
That's a good question though.. I thought the reason they pushed the button was that the electromagnetic force would build up and then pushing the button released it (to where I don't know). So, if noone is pushing it, then it can keep building up? BUT, there was that whole noisy blue sky thing.. maybe the key stopped it? Maybe the station itself was some kind of thing that harnessed the electromagnetic power of the island and concentrated it somehow, so when it imploded the consequences were also destroyed? I don't know..

The only thing I see is that the frieghter folk suddenly made a journey there for something particular and the trip had to take awhile to get there. The islands location was temporarily not top secret and hidden and could get coordinates to find it?
