I'm guessing that journal of Faraday's plays an important part of what is going on as Ceaser found copied pages of it in the Dharma station on hydra island 30 yrs after Daniel was shot, so it must have been pretty important to the final outcome of the show and what is to come. Using knowledge from the future to help the past, it's one way of staying one step ahead...i'm hoping Daniel didn't die for nothing, his death had to be substantial.
