So the Island seems to have the reverse effect on everyone, right? the cards could be another sign of this. This guy is supposedly a physicst,(and I an English major that can't spell that word) right? Pretty smart guy, and now he's forgetting things, losing his memory, as displayed in the card game. Now, I know it's been said that could be why he was freaking out when he watched the news of the boat getting rescued, so that thumps my theory, but what if it is another effect of the island? I know Miles could see what really happened with Naomi, but he seems cocky to me....what if he lost his power and didn't want to admit it? Just throwing it out there.

No I think Dan's memory loss occurred before he got to the island. Just like when he's watching the news report on flight 815 and he starts freaking out...the woman asks him what is wrong and he claims he doesn't know, also Naomi calls him a head case. Futhermore, Charlotte wouldn't tell Dan he's "making progress" if this was something that JUST occurred on the island. Just my 2 cents :)

Duh totally forgot the making progress comment. there was just a lot of time pass that we didn't see what Charlotte and Dan were talking about....thought maybe it was a recent discovery. And the headcase comment. Darn I thought it was all tied in with the island!!!

Yeah, I agree that his memory loss (or whatever they were testing) happened before the island. But, maybe they're aware the island has powers and they think it might help him improve?
I see Daniel as one of those freaky genius types.. Not just a smart guy, but one of those people whose social skills may not be "normal" because he's such a genius. I have a theory (separate from the show) that true genius comes with consequence, and not only scientists but artists and writers and others.
