Richard gave Locke the compass in a time we are not yet aware of. i'm willing to bet Richard will give it to Locke in this episode (ie, that scene where he fixes the leg will take place now). remember there was a time jump between him getting shot and richard patching him up.

lol yeah i just thought of that AFTER i posted. Richard probably hasn't given Locke the compass yet. That scene probably happened before the exchange

I thought Richard gave locke the compass during one of the time jumps and Locke gave it back to Richard when they jumped to the 50s, so Richard is suppose to have it right now.

He said it was kinda rusty.
Wouldnt that imply that hes had it for years?
Remember when Locke gave him the compass...Richard had no idea who he was at all.

i get the feeling Locke's gonna be like "hey Richard be a dear and give that dude in the forest this compass and tell him he's awesome" or something of that manner. a lot of people don't like the 1954 "find me when i'm born" thing because it makes locke's amazingness seem like his own creation, but i love it. people make their own destinies, and locke's a good example of that.

If you think about the whole time line
1. Richard is given the Compass by Locke in the 1950's im thinking 1955
2. young Locke is visited by Richard who has a test for John involving the compass
3. 2006(?) Richard patches up a wounded John and hands him the same compass that John gives to Locke in 55

I think Richard at some point after young Locke fails his test, gets rid of the old compass and then later finds out he needs it again and gets a new one to start the cycle.

The funny part of this is, by the WHH rules, this compass never came into existence. it was never made or born or constructed, it has no beginning and apparently no end.
kinda like God, no?

And all because LOCKE decided thats how it was to be.
Awesome
Remind me, who shot John earlier this season?

go on wiki and check out ontological paradox. Its a WHH time loop but contains items of no natural origin

There was 30 or more years between the time young Locke fails Richards test and the time Richard give a compass to Lock. It is possible Richard got rid of the one from Locke, and replaced it with another one someone else had on the island.

it's possible, yes, but locke just asked richard if he still had the compass (the same one) and richard replied that he did. now, he could already know that that compass will become the one that locke gives him, but i doubt it, as he just now did not know about the whole bullet/compass thing to begin with.
