Jacob is evil, Jacob wanted to kill alex, Jacob has atorcities commited in the islands name. Jacob has been claiming to be following the islands orders when in reality he used his "the man behind the curtain" persona to manipulte events for his own ends. Jacob manipulated Ben and Richard and now the Island has decided to speak up and set events in motion to have Jacob removed.
If you believe in christian mythology, think of the Pope going rogue and God the Father decides to send a disciple directly connected with the Holy Spirit to remove set evil pope.
Pope=Jacob, God the Father=Island, Monster=Holy Spirit,
My pet theory, the Island possessed Lockes body to carry out its misson.

I wonder then is the Jacob "help me" scene a foreshadowing to try to get Locke to not kill him later.
I like you theory tho.
