I don't think Jacob but maybe thru free will he's helped progress his past self with the islands help.

interesting I suppoes since locke somehow knew the island, how to hunt etc I know he did it in his past life but how good can you really be once you really have to put it into practice ?? haha. Anyway yeah you could be right there could be something to do with locke not consciously remembering the island. Maybe he is saved by the temple? same way ben was thus has no idea of the island!
