Locke asked Richard.."Do you still have MY compass?".. Richard replied with (something) its rusty but it still points to north.
Was Locke suppose to pick the compass in his "test"? Locke pulled a few items towards him but Actually Picked the knife (he likes knives) but was he Suppose to pick the Compass as to "what belongs to him"?

--did the compass ever 'really' point to north?

I think Richard was confused as to why he was given that compass and who this John Locke individual was. That is why he visted Locke. I guess he derived that test for Locke...yes, Locke should have picked the compass.

The funny thing about the compass is that "it" is in fact in a time loop. That compass is stuck going from Richard to Locke. Who had the compass first Richard or Locke?? You can't answer that.

When Locke gave sayid his compass...way back when sayid had danielles map it was really really weird. Sayid acted surprised to see locke and said something about not hearing him I "where did you come from?" anywho...he gave sayid his compass and said he needed it more. Later jack showed up and he and sayid noticed that the compass didn't quite point north, it was a little off.
