maybe so no one on the island can see the 'freighter'?

Still, they could be much closer. IIRC, the horizon is somewhere between 20 & 25 miles away from where one stands at sea level. So why stay so far from the island, knowing the helicopter ride is a tricky one?

maybe they don't want to risk being shipwreaked on the island...they probably are afraid of what has happened before....they only risked a few key people coming over on the heli.....

Could it be because of the electrical storm, it could be within the 80NM zone. but that won't explain how the food/box drops can be done. unless there is a window to bipass the storm.
magnetic pull to the island. The hatch had an magnetic pull (I think? it was so long ago, but there was an element of magnetics use in previous eps.)
80NM could be the safe zone.

Good points! Which tells us that the folks on the boat know a lot about the island already.

In another post someone suggested the island could be moving. The freighter could also be moving in a orbit around the island just far enough away to keep it from being drawn in by the island. It doesn't say that the freighter isn't moving- just that it is 80 miles away.
