What does everyone make of that whole situation??

Yes...he picked those people to help him.
Presumably to go back in time and blow up the bomb....which sets up some scenario where they die in that time period and flash back to present.

Remember the last thing Jacob said: Theyre coming. He means the rest of the Losties are coming.
