well I think these two guys have been trapped in some sort of loop (?) and anti says its going to happen again and jacob was basically saying because it happens over and over it really only happens once. if the loop is broken, then they can move forward

that is what i was thinking aswell - especially after the comment that was something along the lines of them always being violent.

and what about the part about progress? Sounds like they experience this loop over and over. Each time the Losties make more "correct" decisions regarding what is supposed to happen and steering them all towards their proper fates.

As you know, I am biased, but I thought he meant the first occurrance of an event is "history", then he gets to "change" it in the name of progress. I realize that's taking a lot of liberties, but like I said, I'm biased.

I've held off commenting on my theory for some time but anyway, here's what the finale has lead me to believe.
One thing that we heard throughout the entire finale is whatever happened, happened. What's done is done, and yes - it only happens once, anything else is just progress.
They are stuck in time. No matter what they do in 1977, the plane still crashes. Michele Rodriguez is always going to be dead and Charlie is not coming back.
When they went back to the island, they got stuck in a parallel universe.
In 1 universe, the electromagnet was destroyed by the bomb and they won't be on the plane for it to crash because they are already on the island.
In another universe, the plane crashed, they are on they are on the island and they get off to go back to real life.
Basically, they're stuck in time and will never get to a point where their plane will never have crashed and they land safely at LAX because that happened. It can't be changed.
Anything else is just progress is a powerful statement because the same scenario is playing out in multiple different times simultaneously, each time with a different outcome. The outcome in one time will not change the outcome in another.
I think the biggest tragedy will be that Sun and Jin never sync back up. Now that Jin exists in a time where the electromagnet that triggered the time travel has been destroyed, he can't move forward. The only way would be for someone to kick the donkey wheel in present time to set the ball rolling again on time travel and Sun and group end up back at the time where Jin is.
Ugg...I hate having to wait 7 months for another Lost!!!!

i think the events repeat themselves for jacob and mr. X but not necessarily with the same people. I think this whole conversation basically is saying people come to the island from wherever, find it is a magical place, and instead of doing something good with it they turn greedy, fight and ultimately die. then a while later more come

well thought out post, fm.
what I am interested in is to know who did Jacob try to bring to the Island B4the Black Rock? maybe there's a spinoff in the making.

Well, what Jacob actually said was that it only "ends" once after AJ talked about how people come, fight, destroy and corrupt, noting that "it always ends the same."
So, I don't think that argues for a time loop (and I thought that TPTB already ruled out time loops and alternate universes), but rather, a definite end with people's actions, thoughts, etc., evolving over time, which is the "progress" Jacob refers to.

There are no other universes just one stop making more when there is already to much
