If you read the story about Enki & Enlil (Google it) you will learn this is where the writers are getting their plot ideas. Jacob is Enki and his island companion is Enlil. They are The Ancients. Enki is good and Enlil is bad. They have been warring for thousands of years. Richard is Jacobs son. That's why he doesn't age. Enki, according to sumerian texts and the Bible, is the one who warned Noah of the coming flood. Enki is always saving mankind. Enlil is always trying to destroy them. In the episode he said: "It's alaways the same, they fight, they destroy.....blah blah". Jacob says: "there is only one end, everything else is progress".The Island is the fabeled Garden of Eden were mankind began. Remember, man was banished from the garden. That's why women can't have children there. According to Sumerian texts Enki & Enlil are decendants of the God Anu from Nibiru. They are Anunnaki. That is why Locke (Enkil) was suprised when Enki (Jacob) told him that they are coming. Sumerian texts and the Myan calander states that Nibiru is due back in our solar system in 2012. Nobody is supposed to be able to find Eden. That's why on LOST they can move the Island. They are taking just bits and pieces from the story of Enki and Enkil to create a good TV show. I still like LOST even though I have figured out where they are going with this. Check out the cloth that Jacob weaved. If you look closely, you will see It tells the story of the coming of The Ancient Gods. Yes, the ones that actually built the Pyramids in Giza. If you don't believe me.....look it up yourselves! If you have an open mind to this, please respond.

intresting theory, but it does have some flaws, 1 babys have been born on the island, and consived on the island, and you say babys can't be born but then you say richard is jacob's son!
(ps: pie i get the fealing that you say "i like pie" after every poast, might i recomend making it ur signature...)

You've definitely done some thinking, but the way they make it out on the finale, it almost seemed like Jacob was in someway the evil one

That is interesting and all but I have problem with Richard being Jacob's son. I'm pretty much convinced that Richard was aboard the Black Rock for two reasons; one, that he can often be seen constructing his little ship in a bottle which for LOST could very easily be a clue, and two, that from Ilena's addressing him by a hispanic title could hint toward Richard being of Spanish origin. This would link in neatly with the Spanish empire and the slave trade, being that the Black Rock had slaves on board. Unless of course he is Jacob's son and Richard was sent out to bring others to the island - and did so by bringing them on the Black Rock.
Also; I like pie.
there is no such thing as a hispanic name, only spanish names, which in turn are Roman names, hispanic means to speak spanish and is not really a race. During the slave trade Spanish refereed soley to nationality, Castillian was the title for the language.
but if you substitute hispanic for roman, what you say is possible

hispanic, spanish, españolish, or españoligese, does it really have anything to do with Lost?

As Vincentismybff has noted: Richard spoke the latin term "The one who will save us". Although Richard is on the Island now doesn't mean he was born there. Plus, who says the Gods genes follow the same rule as regular humans. Richard, Jacob, and the man in black do show signs of longevity. Those that were born and lived were conceived before landing on the island. Those conceived and born on the island don't survive. Don't forget there is a BIG difference if you look at the fact that Jacob & the other guy on the beach are decendants of the Gods, the island would have nothing to do with Richard being Jacobs son. Jacob is not the bad one. The other guy went through great lengths to find a loophole to come back to kill Jacob. The clue here is Jacob was wearing white and the other guy was wearing black. They are brothers. you might want to read the story of Enki and Enkil, which is where I think the writers are getting their ideas. you would be suprised that it's THAT simple. Take some time out and GOOGLE it. Do a little research for the cause. this is all in good fun. we may ALL be right AND wrong.

I believe that Jacob's "enemy" is also his brother and is named Esau
There is a bible story about how Isaac and Rebekah have children named Jacob and Esau. I am going to copy some things i found from this.
""But before they were even born, Rebekah could feel them kicking and fighting inside her.
“Why is this happening?” she called out.
And God answered her,
“The two children inside you
will become the fathers of two nations.
Just like the two are fighting with each other now,
the two nations will struggle with each other.
One will be stronger than the other.
and the older will serve the younger.” "
The first baby born was a boy. He was all red and covered with hair, and so Isaac and Rebekah named him Esau, which sounded like their word for “red.” The second baby was also a boy, and he came grabbing onto Esau’s heel. So they named him Jacob, which sounded like their word for “heel.”
The boys grew up.
Esau became a strong and skillful hunter who loved the outdoors.
Jacob was a quiet man, who preferred to stay home.
this only makes sense right? Jacob loves to stay alone with himself at home.
Later in this story, Esau goes out on a long hunt, but comes home starving because he couldn't find anything. His brother Jacob was making delicious stew. Esau pleaded for some, but Jacob said the only way he would give him any was if he gave him his birthright. (which means that he would be said to be older, and the leader when their father dies) Esau being so hungy and in the moment agreed and gave up his birthright. Making Jacob older, and the leader.
Later on their father grew old, he beckoned for Esau, he asked him to go out and get him his favortie meal, and he would recieve his fathers blessing. Esau agreed and left. Rebekah overheard them and told Jacob that his father had sent Esau away to hunt and get him his favorite meal, and then he were to recieve his fathers blessing. Rebekah then told Jacob to go out and get two goats to make the dinner and pretend to be Esau, so that Jacob could then recieve his fathers blessing. Jacob complained that Esau was hairy and he wasn't, and that Isaac would know the difference. His mother said the curse would be on her and sent him away to retrieve the goats.
He came back, and his mother made the meal. Jacob put on some of Esau's clothes and brought the meal to his father..
“Who is there?” his father asked.
“It is your first born son Esau,” Jacob said. “I have brought your favorite dinner, just like you asked.”
“How did you do it so quickly?” his father asked.
“Your God was with me, and he gave me success,” Jacob answered. “Eat, and then you can give me your blessing.”
“You don’t sound like Esau,” Isaac said. “You sound like your brother Jacob. Come here. Let me touch you.”
Isaac felt the fur on Jacob’s neck and arms. And then he said, “The voice is Jacob’s, but the arms are Esau’s.”
He was about to give his blessing when he asked again, “Are you really my son Esau?”
“Yes, I am,” Jacob lied.
And so Isaac ate the meal he thought Esau had brought him. When he was finished he said, “Come here, my son, and kiss me, and then I will give you my blessing.”
So Jacob came near his father and kissed him. Isaac could smell the smell of Esau’s clothes, and so he said,
“The smell of my son is like the smell
of open country the Lord has blessed.
May God give you the dew of heaven,
and the richness of the earth,
corn and new wine in plenty!
Let nations and peoples serve you.
May you rule over your brothers,
and may they bow down to you.
Let anyone who curses you be cursed,
but blessed be anyone who blesses you!”
SORRY ABOUT THIS BEING SO LONG, ITS A LOT OF INFO I FEEL IS RELEVANT!!
(just a little more!)
So then Jacob left, and shortly after Esau returned with a steaming hot meal. His father said...
Who are you?” his father asked.
“Why, I am your firstborn son Esau, of course!” Esau said.
All of a sudden Isaac began to shake terribly. He knew he had been tricked. “Then who was just here? Who brought me my favorite meal, the one that I just ate? I gave him the blessing. and I can’t take it back!”
Esau knew right away who it was.
He cried out a terrible cry.
“Bless me also!” he pleaded.
“I can’t,” Isaac said,“Your brother has tricked me, and he has stolen your blessing.”
Esau cried out again.
“You named him right when you named him Jacob,” Esau cried (‘Jacob’ sounds like their word for ‘cheat’). “He has cheated me twice. First he took my birthright, and now he has stolen my blessing!” Now he knew how valuable his father’s blessings were - but it was too late.
“You must have a blessing for me,” he said to his father.
Isaac said, “I have already made you your brother’s servant. I have given him the corn and new wine of our fields. What do I have left to give to you?”
Esau fell to his knees. “Is there nothing left for me?” he cried out.
Then his father said to him,
“You will not have the richness of the earth,
The dew from heaven won’t be given to you.
You will have to live by taking,
and you will serve your brother.
But one day you will break free.”
Recall that last line, "But one day you will break free."
THIS IS ONLY LOGICaL!
thanks for reading.

This is certainly interesting, but it's not that simple. It's not like the writers are just using this myth, they are using a LOT of similar myths. Enki is also god of beer and incest, think that will play into Lost? I think this does add to the background of the show, but I don't think any one mythology will map perfectly onto the characters or storyline. It's an amalgam.

I have done a lot of research into this, and I can tell you this is not MYTHOLOGY. The Sumerians were not mythological beings. They were a real civilization. They have written records of which a lot seems far fetched, it has been falsely labeled as myth. Don't forget TROY was a "myth" until they actually found it. Research NIBIRU or ANUNNAKI. Now THAT would make a good show.

even if it isn't a myth, i can't see writers just taking this one idea and using it for the entire show.

Remember that the theme to this entire show is science vs faith. I do believe that the Jacob/Anti Jacob struggle has a mythological or religious aspect to it. However, I don't think the writers are going to take a biblical direction in explaining possibly the most essential part of the show. The stories of feuding brothers/friends are intriguing but its not going to be that simple. In the end its all going to be a mashup of science-meets-destiny.

Likewise, I can't see them just taking the Jacob/Esau idea and using it for the entire show either.

As are all stories of gods.
I think LOST is trying to show the source for all these mythologies, from current religions to ancient ones. I think the dynamic of Jacob and anti-Jacob is this source: Enki/Enlil, Jacob/Esau, Jesus("God")/Satan, Horus/?, probably many others. They are just Jacob vs anti-Jacob at different times in history.

I agree with everyone who says they are using lots of different mythologies (Sumerian, biblical, etc) and not just basing Jacob and the anti-Jacob on one mythology. When I watched the first scene in the finale, I thought of Odin and Loki from Norse mythology - there are just tons of similar stories from lots of different mythologies (and newer fiction too) Like one reviewer said, Lost is like Joseph Campbell on crack. lol

Darma M, Love that quote about J. Campbell and Lost! Seeknay, Kylieg, and others, It's very gratifying to me the way Lost has sparked so many people to do research for this program. Whatever race, culture, religion or philosophy we come out of, Lost has something in it for everyone. Thanks Seeknay--the Enki, Enlil catch is great! And Kylieg, thanks for posting the story of Jacob and Esau so clearly. I was glad to be reminded of it.
When Lost is finally done, I hope someone will deconstruct how they melded all these mythologies, who crafted the way they put each part together and so on. I'd like to see the initial skeleton structure that supported the whole thing. I know Abrams, Cuse and Lindelof are the heart of Lost and there's a host of writer/creators, but who added the pectorals, the biceps, the six pack that have been the muscles of this show? To me, that would be an interesting book to read. If ever there is an explanation, or until then, I will keep looking up sources to try to to understand the story better--just like all of you guys and gals. For now, onto Enki and Enlil!!:D
