NZ, you have done your homework. I did not even know in detail half of what you have wonderfully summarized.
This is the first day I have noticed you on the forum and loved your dehydrated water and sleep walking story.
I find it so fascinating to be here and chatting with people from all over.
You are our first New Zealander I know of and it's great.
It appears you may be part of the braintrust of this page, and hope you also like to joke around as well. LOL

Cut and paste from www.lostpedia.com/wiki/Stations FYI

The DHARMA Initiative built a series of stations on the Island. The different stations have different purposes. Some stations are for research into various scientific subjects but other stations provide communications infrastructure. According to the Sri Lanka Video, they were created to help scientists "save the world as we know it" via research in various fields such as zoology and psychology. All of the stations seen so far have power and running water. Each facility has its own, octagon-shaped logo.

After the Purge, the Others began using the stations for their own purposes.

Though the stations have been abandoned for a number of years, all of them still have power and light. Some have been shown to still have running water and resupply airdrops were still occurring at the Swan in 2004.

The Arrow
See main article: The Arrow
Station Number: 1 (unconfirmed)
Blast Door Map: top
Quarantine Marker: Found
Possible Function: Storage/mathematicial work (?)
Orientation Film: Not Found
Found By: The Tailies
Further Information: The Arrow station was once one of the DHARMA initiative research stations referred to in the Swan Orientation Film. In 2004, the station is largely empty except for several boxes, one containing a glass eye and copies of the Bible.

Its name and symbol were noted on the blast door map. As in the Swan station "QUARANTINE" is written on the inside of the door. The station still has power and light, operated by some kind of switchbox. No Arrow-specific Orientation Film has been found.

The tail section survivors of Oceanic Flight 815 lived here before merging with the middle section survivors.

The Staff
The Staff
See main article: The Staff
Station Number: Unknown
Blast Door Map: top left
Quarantine Marker: Not Found
Possible Function: Medical
Orientation Film: Not Found
Found By: Claire, Kate and Rousseau
Further Information: The Staff is a DHARMA Initiative station. It appears to be a medical station. Claire was taken here after being abducted by Ethan. ("Maternity Leave") Presumably, the fully operational staff was preparing her for a forced birthing, to deliver Aaron into the clutches of the Others. After her escape (assisted by Alex), the station was abandoned. The station was later revisited by Claire, along with Kate and Rousseau ("Maternity Leave")

It was also visited by Juliet and Sun when they went to find out the date of Sun's conception ("D.O.C.")

According to the station's position in the blast door map, it appears to be located in the western portion of the Island. No Staff-specific Orientation Film has been found, and unlike the the Swan and the Arrow stations, there is no "Quarantine" warning on any of the doors of the station.

The Swan
The Swan
See main article: The Swan
Station Number: 3 (According to Orientation Video)
Blast Door Map: bottom
Quarantine Marker: Found
Possible Function: Electromagnetism
Orientation Film: found
Found By: Locke and Boone
Further Information: The Swan is DHARMA Initiative Station number 3, first discovered by Locke and Boone. ("All The Best Cowboys Have Daddy Issues")

According to its orientation film, the Swan was originally a laboratory "where scientists could work to understand the unique electromagnetic fluctuations emanating from this sector of the Island". However, after an "Incident", a protocol had to be followed in which two people would take shifts pressing a button (Inputting the Numbers) into a Computer) every 108 minutes for 540 days, at the end of which replacements will arrive to take the place of the previous inhabitants. It is located in the southern region of the Island, about a mile inland of the crash of Flight 815. There is a fail safe switch, whose function if activated still remains mysterious. The switch was activated and the station imploded following the discharge. The Swan had also work men, and it's no longer in use (Destroyed). ("Live Together, Die Alone")

The Flame
The Flame
See main article: The Flame
Station Number: 4 (According to the Blast Door Map)
Blast Door Map: bottom left
Quarantine Marker: Not Found
Possible Function: Communication
Orientation Film: Not Found (however, a set of instructions were given on the computer)
Found By: Kate, Locke, Sayid and Rousseau
Further Information: The Flame is the name of a DHARMA initiative communications station. Its name and symbol were depicted on the blast door map, but the location is describe as "alleged".

The station itself exists in three parts. The outside is a paddock for cows, inside is a living area, some storage, and a computer room. Underneath a rug is a door to a lower hatch area. This hatch contains DHARMA paperwork and more storage. The Flame was also rigged with a self-destruct feature consisting of C-4 explosive wired throughout the lower level. When Locke entered the code "77" into the Flame's computer, the self-destruct sequence was initiated and the Flame exploded soon after Kate and Locke left ("Enter 77") .

The Pearl
The Pearl
See main article: The Pearl
Station Number: 5 (According to Orientation Video)
Blast Door Map: The ? in the middle.
Quarantine Marker: Not Found
Possible Function: Psychological
Orientation Film: found (U-matic tape)
Found By: Nikki and Paulo, later by Eko and Locke
Further Information: The Pearl is a DHARMA Initiative station and was first discovered by Nikki and Paulo and later by Locke and Mr. Eko. The task of this station, according to its Orientation video, is to monitor the Swan station and, other stations via a Remote Viewing system. The orientation video also states that the inhabitants of the Swan station are unknowingly part of a psychological experiment and the Pearl's occupants are to record their every behavior. However it is presumed the work the Pearl staff was conducting was in fact the real psychological experiment, since the notebooks they were asked to fill ended up at a dump. ("?") Dharma Initiative staff members delivered food and supplies to the Pearl from time to time. ("The Man Behind the Curtain").

There was also a hidden camera present in the Pearl, indicating they and not the Swan residents were the subject of the experiment. The station consists of a corridor with an octagonal tunnel leading down by ladder to the outside and one large, octagonal room, in which nine television sets are fed live surveillance pictures. There appears to be damage to this station: missing panels in the roof, loose wires, boulder in room. There are no living quarters for the Pearl's personnel, as they only served in eight-hour shifts. However, there is a still-working toilet in a room placed left in the station. ("The Cost of Living") This station is the place where we first saw Mikhail Bakunin.

The Orchid
The Orchid
See main article: The Orchid
Station Number: 6 (According to Orientation Video)
Blast Door Map: Not listed by name - Could be the Crossed Out Station
Quarantine Marker: Not Found
Possible Function: Fake botanical Station
Orientation Film: found (U-matic tape)
Found By: Not discovered by the lostaways yet
Further Information: The only information we have about this station comes from a video released by ABC.

The Hydra
The Hydra
See main article: The Hydra
Station Number: Unknown
Blast Door Map: Not listed
Quarantine Marker: Not Found
Possible Function: Zoological
Orientation Film: Not found
Found By: Jack, Kate and Sawyer were taken there by the Others
Further Information: The Hydra is the name of a zoological DHARMA Initiative station. It includes both an underwater aquarium section, a number of animal cages above ground and multiple large above-ground buildings. In the past, it held animals such as sharks, dolphins, and polar bears for experimental purposes. The Others controlled the station and did unspecified work at the location. The station is on a small island off the coast of the the main Island.

The Looking Glass
The Looking Glass
See main article: The Looking Glass
Station Number: Unknown
Blast Door Map: Not listed
Quarantine Marker: Not Found
Possible Function: unknown
Orientation Film: Not found
Found By: Charlie and Desmond
Further Information: The Looking Glass is an underwater station with a moon pool and signal jamming equipment. It is connected to the mainland via a Cable. Ben Linus told The Others that the station was flooded but this is untrue. Two Others were stationed at the Looking Glass in secret by Ben as guards. At the end of Season 3, the Others had lost control of the station and it was partially flooded.

Possible stations

* Two stations, drawn with dotted lines on the blast door map, are labeled with "C3?" and "C4?".
* There is a seventh station on the blast door map that was crossed out. Elsewhere on the map, the text "Alleged location of aborted #7. Large number of underground springs, heavy water table" appears. The text may refer to the seventh station, which may also be the Looking Glass or the "Door".
* The Door was presumed to be the Hatch to another station, but when opened by Sayid ("Live Together, Die Alone") the door was revealed to lead to a wall of rock. However, this may be the aborted #7 station.
* Other Stations on the Blast Door Map are crossed out which could be another station. The Crossed Out Station

The Name and Logo

Like many very old words, "dharma" has more than one definition. It's used in several Eastern religions, including Buddhism, Hinduism and Jainism. Its primary meaning relates to a person's duty or role in relation to the universe. It can also mean:

* The collective teachings of Buddha
* The principle that governs the universe
* Individual conduct within society
* Knowledge

The DHARMA Initiative uses the word as an acronym. Although the Initiative has not publicly revealed what the letters mean, the first two likely stand for the names DeGroot and Hanso. The Initiative's use of the word suggests that its principles are based on Eastern spiritual practices. These practices generally promote nonviolence and ethical behavior.

The logo is a bagua, an octagonal symbol that incorporates symbols from Taoism and Confucianism. In a bagua, the eight trigrams of the "I Ching" surround a yin-yang. The yin-yang is a well-known Taoist symbol that represents change and balance. Trigrams are simply three-line combinations of whole and broken lines.

A bagua, the source of the DHARMA logo

The "I Ching," also called "The Book of Changes," is an ancient Chinese text that interprets hexagrams, or pairs of trigrams. These interpretations are used for spiritual guidance and fortune telling, as well as in feng shui. There are eight possible trigrams and sixty-four possible hexagrams. You can learn more about the "I Ching" and hexagram interpretation by reading this online version of the text.

In addition, DHARMA Initiative communications often close with "namaste," a greeting used in Eastern cultures. Like "dharma," "namaste" can be difficult to define precisely. It generally means "I salute the divine within you." People say it, often making the accompanying mudra, or hand gesture, to show respect for elders or in the context of spiritual meetings or yoga practices.

Eastern spirituality may have even made its way into the infamous series of numbers that appears in a range of contexts surrounding the Initiative. The numbers -- 4, 8, 15, 16, 23 and 42 -- add up to a total of 108. Two of the central tenets of Buddhism are the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold path. The "Dhammapada," the collected writings of Buddha, has 423 verses. There are also 108 beads in a Hindu or Buddhist mala, or rosary, and 108 names for Hindu gods.

A Buddhist mala and the Dhammapada:
108 beads and 423 verses

It seems clear that Eastern spiritual practices, which generally promote nonviolence, simplicity and ethical behavior, are important to the DeGroots and the DHARMA Initiative. So why would such an organization align itself with a well-known arms dealer? There are two primary possibilities:

1. They had no other choice. No matter how idealistic the DeGroots may have been when they started the DHARMA Initiative, such a project requires a lot of money. The people most likely to have that kind of money aren't typically devoted to spiritual practices that discourage the hoarding of wealth.
2. It's all spin. The focus on pacifist spiritual practices may be a devious attempt to disguise unethical or dangerous experiments.

The DHARMA Initiative's motives for building a research center on an island are unclear, as are its current activities there. But they have left a few clues. We'll look at those next.

4 8 15 16 23 42
It didn't take long for those numbers to start giving people the creeps. They've driven some people crazy, while cursing others. Along with multiple warnings about opening a box, their presence on the Station 3 hatch has led some people to believe that the station is evil.

The sequence appears in full on the injectable substances used in Station 3 and the medical bunker. Numbers from it also appear often in the lives of the Flight 815 survivors before and after the crash. They have a mystical quality that cannot fully be explained, but they also have some interesting parallels:

* The periodic table: The elements beryllium, oxygen, phosphorous, sulfur, vanadium and molybdenum appear at the positions that correlate to the numbers.
* The "I Ching": The hexagrams that correspond to the numbers represent enveloping, grouping, humbling, providing for, stripping and augmenting.
* The globe: Entering "4.815 162.342" into Google Maps displays a point in the ocean northeast of Australia and southwest of the Marshall Islands.

Check out the forums at www.4815162342.com, The Fuselage, and Lost-TV for more theories on the numbers.
