I discussed this earlier and decided I would write it down as a prediction. Its fairly "underthought" as a theory. I just have it in its infancy, but I liked it enough that I thought I would write it down.

The Theory
The "Dharma initiative" (DI) and the "others" are two fractions of the same Philosophy and ideology of Jacob. The first group termed the others were the "Back to Nature" version of the philosophy. The 2nd group of the others, the DI fraction, was the "Back to Science" version of the philosophy. This makes a lot of sense because this is basically how Jacobs philosophy divides up.

A Divided Philosophy
The two groups were in competition for Jacobs attention as to who better represented his philosophy. The nature side, hunter fraction won out and eventually killed off the science geeks (DI).

Its interesting because it is actually an internal philosophical argument unlike the one between Jacob and Juan (Nemesis). This divided fraction of Jacobs philosophy also mirrors the true historical development of Empiricism. We don't consider science any more to be a study of philosophy...but indeed they share a common trunk of the history tree. Early Empiricists were primary philosophers who observed experience as a manifestion of senses. However from those early philosophers grew the scientists of today and to which science ultimately branched out from that philosophical movement.

The others and DI fundamentally however believe the same thing. Namely, that human experience is derived from senses and objects and objective characteristics. The others believe this in its basic rudimentary form. They maintain this by living with nature. Hunting boar, touching the earth, and feeling the rain. The DI, are an "advanced" or "later interpretation" of this same philosophy. The DI believe this as a function of scientific experimentation applying the same "fundamental" principals but carefully detailing the observations. We call this process the "Scientific Method" however it is still "empirical" and related to observations of the senses.

No Smokie
I believe the more modern DI Others could have established the sonic fence to keep smokie out of their "dreams", or really, possibly just to keep the others out without any regard to Smokie. However, its interesting to note that we were never shown much in the form of "Smokie" interfering with the DI; eventhough, the majority of their experiements and projects were conducted outside of the protective sonic barrier. We also have no real evidence that smokie did much to interfere with the Others as well. The reason for this is that it is not permitted and is against the rules. The Others and the DI are protected from being killed exactly as Jacob is protected. The fact that both of these groups share this rule protection is further evidence that these fractions are part of the same Jacob philosophy.

The Purge
The use of the word Purge, provides further evidence to confirm that the DI was the scientific version of the others. Purge means to: To free from impurities; purify. It has the double entredre of purifying the island but I don't think thats its primary means. I know this is a common belief but that has never made much sense to me...because to me the Island is just a single word to mean (Jacob and Nemesis). Its primary meaning is that they needed to purge their philosophy of these new thought processes.

Ben, born out of that tradition of the DI others; eventhough, he had helped purge it, subconsciously drew the nature loving others back to it. I believe that Ben continued obtaining Hanso foundation money by running the others as the most current ruling version of Jacobs philosophy.

MibLocke-a return to science
In season 5 when MiBLocke is giving Ben a hard time as they are going through the old Dharma camps. He tells Ben something to the effect, so you brought the Others to live back in the DI camp, how ironic is that and he turns around smiles at Ben who is pretty dejected? MiBLocke basically is making fun of Ben and Jacobs philosophy as they can't seem to make up their mind what they want to do.

This turns out to be ironic because the "back to Nature" fraction of Jacobs philosophy, eventually, again turned back to the "civilized" lifestyles, organized measurements form of the others, ie science and the DI. Despite the purge, Ben was causing the others to fraction into a DI-Lite version of the others. This included medical experimentation on genetics and maternity issues. These were the very kinds of "scientic" experiments for which the DI was originally killed off for. So, once again, the philosophy had showed its true historical context mirrored on the island. That ultimately emphicism and sensory object experience leads to the roots of all science. This is the true history of empiricism and likewise of the philosophical development of this same philosophy on the island via the DI and others as Lost demonstrates.
