Desmond is the KEY to LOST
I have already written posts for the last 2 months especially concerning philosophy, and the sickness, and the EMF effects. It would be difficult to understand the following unless you have read some of that other stuff to understand where I'm coming from. I still believe all my posts and theory of the show principally being about philosophy and is principally a game or thought experiment. However, we still have the shows central plot playout and conclusion of those concepts and this is my first stab at a more far reaching theory thats inclusive of the dynamics of and details of the conclusion of the show.
Locke does not kill Desmond because Desmond’s “Philosophy” -- not his “conscience” -- is what went to the Flash Sideways. I didn’t put that together right away and I’m the guy saying philosophy, philosophy, philosophy
. Anyway, his philosophy from this timeline went to the FS and his philosophy from the FS went to this timeline. They consolidated and traded places. So the Desmond in the FS is now an empiricist…. He’s basically like Ben was in episode 2-4. He’s just manipulating people and killing them like Ben would do and like we saw for most of the first 5 seasons of Lost except hes doing it in the FS. Even one of his first tasks was to assemble "a list"...something we've heard all too much previously by Ben and the Others. However, on the island, Desmond now has what the Others called the “sickness”. His heart has grown “dark” (no emotions). This is why Desmond seems to have no fear of death and no emotions…. He has become a rationalist philosophically.
Basically said the EM field caused a philosophy switch and half of his philosophy “died” or “switched” (take your pick) in the current timeline. Perhaps even Desmond “on island” has died, but come back to life on island as (what we were calling a) “Zombie” because his off island presence still exists and he has only simply switched philosophy with the FS. The huge EM field basically was a way to sort of manually inducing the Smokey process of “claiming people” or giving them the “sickness” electromagnetically.
I think this method could be crucial going forward to put people on team Smokey that could sabotage his team but that he can’t kill. Call it a merge if you want but switching philosophies between the FS and the current reality allows you a pseudo way to move players between teams using the other universe. Demonstrated by mistake by Widmore...its still a great ultimate strategy.
The behavior of Desmond in the FS is Empiricist, going after penny as a love interest, killing Locke, observing Locke (very much like Ben). The behavior of Desmond on the Island is Rationalist, no feelings, no fear (very much like Smokey).
Locke does not kill Desmond: why? Well he can’t kill him directly. I'm sure I believe this is the same exact rule as the Candidates. He can’t kill Desmond because now he is one of his own people (perhaps someone from his own universe timeline). He has the same philosophy as Locke. The only way to get rid of Desmond on island now is for someone else besides Locke to kill him…. So he throws him down a well…good move by Smokey.
Desmond now has the “sickness”…just like Sayid and just like Claire. The significance of this is enormous. Why? In my opinion, the FS actually hints to what the sickness is and what the rest of Lost is about.
