how and why does charlie die????? he was in a room that he pulled the door shut on when the room fills with water he simply could push it open givin that pressure would be releasing the room. charlie could have survived.
Mikhail detonated the hand grenade and presumably blew a hole in the room. Charlie died first though because he drowned. I know, he could have really run out of the room first and closed the door behind him but I think because he was really a religious person he believed what Des told him and that he was destined to die there. He really made his own "destiny." A self-fulfilled prophecy.

You're right in fact if had left the door open, water would not have even come in through the broken window. Air would have rushed out of the broken window and the moon pool would have risen slowly until it reached the level of the window.
He could have just swam back out.
He died because Des told him to. He thought he was saving everyone else, especially Claire and Aaron. I think Des lied to him.
Desmond obviously told th truth about Charlie dying in the station and pretty much how but lied about what happens as a result with Claire and Aaron being rescued, I also think that when Charlie asked Desmond if he had any more flashes and he said no is because either 1) Desmond hadnt interfered and saves Charlies life so "no course correction" needed or 2) Desmond didnt see anything because this was the way Charlie does die.
Hey, LT, refresh my memory, please. How come every now and then I read posts that people think Desmond lied to Charlie in order to get to Penny?
I just can't think of Des being like that (letting Charlie die to do it, I mean) but maybe I missed a scene??

I like Wiley's comment. The physics of that scene were off.
I posit that Desmond was being manipulated by the Smoke Monster / Man In Black / Jacob. Desmond's powers were to travel through time, not see the future, so these visions could very well have been similar to what Locke, Eko, and others saw.
I agree it seems doubtful that Desmond was lying. It seems out of character and he named his son after Charlie and the emotions he felt did not seem to be guilt.
This whole show is about confusing the lines between Destiny and Free Will and Charlie's death was a good example. Did he die because he had to or because he chose to?

I dont recall him lying just to get to Penny, think people were saying he was lying about Claire and Aaron being rescued if Charlie went and did wha the was supposed to do.
From what I a munderstanding or seeing this scenario is Desmond remembers his conversation with Ms hawking about "course correcting" and all that and if she intervened so the guy with red shoes doesnt die the way he did than something else would be the cause of his death and that would continue until she just let him die and didnt interfere . So the same thing wit hCharlie. Desmond tried and tried but with each intervention on Desmonds part a new vision of how Charlie would die pops up. So to make Charlie believe that people he really loved would be saved(Claire and Aaron) he lied and told them that if he does this than they would be lifted off on a helicopter off the Island. Something like that.
