Why does everyone assume the "they're dead" explanation?
I have not been on the forums in a while and I was bored here at work so I thought I would check out the old foums. After browsing the threads hear I can see that a lot of people are saying the flashsideways is not an alt timeline and that everyone was just dead... am I missing something? Was there some extr info released that I did not see?? I saw the finale and the ending just went white. As far as Im concerned they stayed in the FS, in an alternate world. They just all had knowledge of their alternate lives. They were as much dead as they were all alive. The FS no matter how you interpret it was an alternate story for the characters that happened parallel to the original story. So am i missing something or are people just discussing their own interpretations because as it stands my own interpretation is still valid.
It's how the story ended... Jack realizes that he died when he's asked "how are YOU here."
- "I died too."
- (Referring to those in the church) "they're dead too?"
- Christian responds "everyone dies sometime."

... but that's not important right now.
It is an assumption that that is the only way to interpret the ending. If you follow the alternate timeline/universe interpretation then everyone dies multiple times because there are multiple timelines. Yes, all the characters lived and died in the first timeline, but we also see that in the alternate timeline everyone is alive and as a result can die again. Also, you could go as far to say there are an infinite number of timelines where these characters experience an infinite number of situations and they may or not be aware of the experiences of the other timelines... my interpretation of the ending and the upside of the ending was not that everyone was dead and in heaven and blah blah, but in fact, the miracle of the ending was that these characters were able to be come aware of there experiences in a different timeline and now they get to all be off the island, they have all the feelings and emotions from the original timeline, and everyone is finally at peace, no one is Lost anymore. I don't think the writers every intended there to be one interpretation of the show or the ending either. I'm not saying I'm anymore right that anyone else, I just think that there is no right answer, and no one should assume anything.

Just as your bordom lead you back to this site, my own bordom took me down a path which ended here too. Oh, how I missed these discusions. I have to agree that, although you can rationalize anything, from creation versus evolution, or how darkness is actually light or what ever. I believe I have to side with death. Death is final. The show is over! Gone, ka put. (Excuse my coldness, I too miss the weekly antics of Lost) I think that the creaters and viewers all agreed that that was the best conclusion.

Nice to see you Woogie and Desi.
Woogie, that would be a very nice thing to realize, I guess, but I gotta go with Desi.
Christian was pretty clear in his explanation. And Jack would not have been so shaken if he thought there were re-do's (multiple chances to go on in diff worlds or timelines).
"Everyone dies sometime, Jack. Some before you, some long after."
Plus, I think the only ones in S-6 who we saw die or die again were those who were not in our group of Lostie/Others. (I, for one, could enjoy imagining Keamy, for instance, getting what was coming to him over again. lol)
Also, why would they have needed Desmond to gather them if they had other chances to live or re-live multiple times?
I maintain the S-6 was only their subconscious place - their holding spot - until they were able to move on into the final Light together.
but it's cool to have some LOST discussion again, ain't it?!

Just came here by chance and I am a bit surprised (and kinda happy) someone is still talking about lost.
I think Desi is right and it's actually one of the few things about Lost you can be sure about, we got used to the fact that authors changed their mind during the course (sometimes forced, sometimes on purpose without caring of the consequences), but in this case...they're dead, it's pretty clear.
Sorry I can't add anything to this discussion, just here to say hello to all Lost fans.
