He actually said both. He said "I never want to die, I want to live forever." This request seem to stem from the fact that his sins could not be cleansed and he did not want to go to hell. The whole "can't kill myself will you do it" bit doesn't really make any sense, unless it was just Richard's wishful thinking. I've started to think the fuse went out becuase Richard cannot die and nothing to do with Jack.
