MiB - "They come, they fight, they destroy, they corrupt, it always ends the same".
Jacob - "It only ends once, anything that happens before that is just progress".

You ask how does Jacob know this? Why/How does whoever wrote Revelations know that's going to happen? I think this whole show is based on religious aspects. MiB is Satan, Jacob is Jesus/God, Ben is Judas, and many of the main characters are Apostles. And the big war that's coming ("It only ends once") is Revelations.

I think what's more interesting is what does Jacob mean by "anything that happens before that is just progress"?

What do you mean lock & key specifically? I'm intrigued....
I think there is a reason Locke/ MIB wants to go home.

" No one ever leaves the Island"

Did you see Avatar? James Cameron finished the script in 1995, but the technology did not exist to create his vision. He had to wait until science caught up with his vision, 14 years later.

I think MIB is in the same boat. He had to wait until Dharma brought technology to the Island to create his loophole to try to initiate his plan to "go home".

I think the realities were only a few minutes apart.

Now we see the sideways reality and the Island are three years apart.

I think what was done in the past, Juliet: "it worked" expanded the time gap between places.

Minutes become years. I think it bought someone time to close a loophole.
