The impression I had from the ritual it was very specific, Crazy Lady was rather determined to have it done in exactly that way. Without any evidence to the contrary, I have to assume that for Jacob to pass his responsibilities onto another, it must be done in a similar fashion.

Just a drink ... you didn't see a ritual. At that point it was just a drink of wine and without the ritual ... it is just wine. I think it is the ritual that is important.
