Captian Widmore of the Black Rock

This idea hit me like a ton of bricks after re-watching the final scene of "The Shape of Things to Come", when I noticed a few items of interest around Charles' penthouse suite, the most intruiging being a larged framed picture of a certain sailing vessel right next to his bed. A second painting can be seen through the door to the bedroom which Ben enters through, a landscape piece that bares a striking resemblence to our favorite lil mystery Island, but it was the painting of the Black Rock that really got me thinking.
Its obvious why Widmore would be obsessed with the Island, as its a place with unique powers that could possibly be harnessed and exploited, but why would he be obsessed with the Black Rock enough to have its likeness depicted right next to where he sleeps? I realize that he could see the Black Rock as his greatest lead in finding the Island and this is why he bid so highly for the journal that was aboard it, but what good would a simple picture of the ship do in his hunt? Then it hit me. What if his fondness for the Black Rock is due to the fact that he was on it...or even its Captain?
Looking back at the auction scene from "The Constant" I believe there is further proof when we hear that the journal had belonged to Magnus Hanso, the Black Rock's first mate, NOT its captain. Could Widmore have been the Captain and Hanso his first mate? It would explain the potential on going relationship between Widmore and the Hanso family. Also, the conversation between Charles and Desmond in the bathroom of the auction house has always struck me as strange. It seems Widmore speaks in a very old style fashion, instead of simply asking Desmond "What do you want?" or "Whats going on?" he says in his usual pompous tone "Your word, lets have it." To me that just seems a very 18th or 19th century way to put it. And lastly we have his love for MacCuthceon whiskey, and his esteem for its maker, a decorated member of the Royal Navy. Is it possible that Charles holds him in such high regards as he himself is a fellow sailor and ship Captain? And also, if Widmore has the same non aging thing going on as Richard perhaps he is so attatched to the whiskey as it is one of the few products still available from his old days sailing the high seas? (sh*t maybe its even his constant! lol)
Widmore says the Island was always his and it will be again...I think upon landing there as the Captain of the Black Rock he subdued and "conquered" the natives who originally built the ruins found by the survivors of 815 , and as "conquerer" Widmore truly sees the Island as his by right...CRAZY I KNOW!!!
