I can't exactly recall 2 months later, so let me ask.
When illana and bramm are going to meet up with everyone at jacobs house, was lapidus on the beach with them?
My recent line of thinking is that when illana says lapidus makes a good candidate, they mean to dress him up like locke and try to confuse everyone into believing that's really lockes dead body, when in fact it's lapidus dressed up like locke.
Here is a recap from Lostpedia on the events that took place in the Season 5 finale...
Frank woke up in an outrigger, as Bram, Ilana, and three other survivors arrived at the Main Island with a large metal crate. Frank overheard Bram and Ilana discussing whether or not he was a "candidate." When Frank asked them what he was a candidate for, they did not answer him, although Bram told him not to worry, because they were "friends." Ilana and Bram revealed the contents of the crate to Frank, who was deeply disturbed upon seeing Locke's dead body, since he had seen him alive and seemingly resurrected only hours before.
Frank accompanied Ilana's group to Jacob's Cabin. Along the way, Bram assured him that they were the "good guys," although Frank was skeptical of this claim. At the cabin, Ilana discovered it was abandoned and proceeded to torch it. Frank said he was no "treehugger," but lighting the cabin on fire seemed like a good way to burn the whole jungle down.
Frank arrived at the statue with Ilana's group that night, where Richard gave Ilana the correct answer to the question "what lies in the shadow of the statue?" They then showed Richard, Sun, and the Others the contents of the crate. ("The Incident, Parts 1 & 2")

any thoughts?
No...I think they are discussing whether he is a good candidate to be an "other" like they are.
You may be right, but I think a canidate has to be more than someone to join the Others. A Canidate may be someone to challenge MIB. They may need a canidate body for Jacob to take over. Perhaps they need a canidate to become the next Jacob.
This may be a SPOILER I'm not sure everyone says something different but it was from DARKUFO two seasons ago and DARK got if from an interview with the person.
On the website they had an interview with the guy who plays Frank Lapidus, Jeff Fahey. In the interview to describe the character of Lapidus the Jeff Lahey said something along the lines of, "Frank Lapidus is either more of a GOD or more of a DEVIL."
I'll try and find the link.

Frank should have been piloting 815. Smokey got mad and killed the pilot, Seth Norris.
Smokey knows Frank is important to Jacob/Ilana. I hope he is a candidate for Other
Leader. If Frank turns out to be one of the "bad guys" I will be quite surprised.

Yeh, I suppose he could be a "candidate" for brainwashing ala Locke as well.
I think that Hurley is a candidate for Mr. X although I think he possesses moral certitude that Locke did not have.
i am willing to bet that "the candidate" comments turn out to be fairly meaningless - meaning that they will appear overly dramatic compared to what they really mean. FOr example, season 3 finale last scene with jack and kate and she says "i have to go he will be waiting for me." the way she said it was way to dramatic for the reveal that "he" is aaron. i think thats what will happen with "candidate."
I was thinking that he would be a candidate for joining their team as they tried to get Miles on their side in a previous flashback. Beside Lapidus was shown what was in the metal box and was shocked over what he saw. He even said he wish he hadnt seen what was in the metal box and when they poured the corpse of JL out, Lapidus acted as he already knew so it was JL that Ilana showed him to begin with and the reason they carried it to show jacob and Richard as it turned out
