I’m spending a bit of time rewatching from series 1 (this is only the 2nd time I’ve seen most of the episodes) and I wanted to point out a couple of things that I have noticed in series 2 (I’ve only made it that far to date – slow going!). Some of the dialogue in these episodes didn’t seem to give too much away when first viewed 3 or 4 years ago but, knowing what we know now, it does seem to be quite revealing and may offer an insight/clues into how things may pan out in the final series.
Here are a couple of examples with the transcripts taken from Lostpedia:
Example 1 -Season 2 episode 3 – orientation
When Jack, Des, Sayid etc are trying to fix the computer in the Hatch, the numbers are still counting down which has created panic because they might not be able to fix it in time to input the numbers before the time runs out. There is a conversation that goes like this:
“JACK: You sure seem calm for someone who believes the world's going to end in the next 45 minutes.
LOCKE: He'll fix it.
JACK: You understand that what he's saying. It's -- it's insane. It's impossible.
LOCKE: Why is it insane? JACK: Because the last time I saw a computer that was going to save the world, it didn't look like that.
First time round, I simply assumed that Jack was being sarcastic but now I wonder if he has really has been in this situation before, maybe on a previous time loop, alternate universe or whatever? What do you think?
Example 2 -series 2 episode 13 – The long Con
This is the episode where Sawyer gets Charlie to kidnap Sun from her garden.
After they have completed their mission, they have a conversation that goes like this:
[We see Sawyer walking in the dark jungle and stopping. Charlie approaches.]
SAWYER: He never saw you, huh?
CHARLIE: No, he was more worried about his sodding guns than being followed.
SAWYER: [offering a Virgin Mary statue] Figured you'd want your friends back.
CHARLIE: If I wanted them I would have taken them before I told you where they were. That's not why I did it.
SAWYER: It's not, huh?
CHARLIE: I wanted him to look like a fool -- to feel like a fool. SAWYER: Well, well, it looks like Johnny Locke's got himself a nemesis”
Anyone else think this comment is more revealing than it appears at face value? Does it help with the ‘is John Locke/MIB’ discussion?
Anyone else have more examples? I’m sure there must be many more since I’ve only got to series 2?
Please add your own examples if you want to and maybe it can help us to work out where series 6 is going.
Oh, how interesting! I forgot about Sawyer's use of the word nemesis. Check this out from season 1, episode 8, Confidence Man, with Sawyer....
[We see Sawyer at a restaurant with Jess and her husband, David.]
SAWYER: I'm not sure this is such a good idea.
JESS: Why not?
SAWYER: Because business between friends is always a little sticky. I don't know you well, but I know your wife. Working with her at the auto dealership, I'm just not sure I'm comfortable. DAVID: Louisiana will invest two thirds of the drilling costs. What is this? A loophole?
SAWYER: Look, David, you're reluctant. I get it. You got your lumbar yard, you don't need this.
JESS: You should do this.
DAVID: Jess, I don't even know this guy.
JESS: Show him the cash.
DAVID: How do I know this is real?
SAWYER: The money? Hell, how about you hold on to it for a night. Check it out. I want you to feel secure. You know what? Let's not do this. I've got another investor who's already committed.
JESS: David?
SAWYER: [putting 300 down on the table] This should cover lunch. And I'll see you Monday [to Jess]. David.
JESS: David?
DAVID: Wait.
I am really beginning to find this whole Sawyer thing very interesting. Why does he or those immediately around him, use these words in passing conversation?
Thanks for the post. That was a good find.
I'm sure I'm reaching, here. But it's a lazy Saturday and I have nothing better to do...
2 quotes from The Brig, and 1 from Incident.
SAWYER: And you came all the way back here to tell me this because...?
LOCKE: Because this is the same man who tortured you, beat you, humiliated you. And I want you, to kill him.
SAWYER: You want him dead, you kill him.
LOCKE: I'm not a murderer.
SAWYER: Neither am I!
BEN: "When people join us here on this Island, they need to make a gesture of free will, of commitment. That's why you're gonna have to kill your father."
LOCKE: [Whispers] Do what I asked you to, Ben.
JACOB: Benjamin... whatever he's told you, I want you to understand one thing. You have a choice.
BEN: What "choice"?

I still think it was an illusion of free will, the choices were already made before they were actually made. but for sake of discussion:
We have to determine if this is now the present or past. Seems like what we were watching with Ben and jacob was now the actual Island present and he does have a choice at this point. And really if the Losties are the one who have a destiny, Ben is not a part of this group anyway, so whether he was fulfilling his destiny remains to be seen. And we can also look at what Ben said when he asked "What choice?" It could be he really didnt know what choice Jacob was talking about(which I find it hard to believe he wouldnt know what Jacob was saying to him) or he was saying he had no choice.
With Locke, I still dont see it as doing what Ben said about a gesture of free will. He never killed his father but Sawyer did. The way I see Locke was being Nemesis the whole time is if Nemesis cant kill anyone. He couldnt kill the undercover cop, he coldnt kill his father and in the Foot hut he had Ben do it for him instead of doing it himself. But he did kill Naomi so there goes that thinking.
But very good lines J-D Makes you think about the WHH and Free will.

Nice JD. That surely points to free will. I think it is also pointing to something else. Why couldn't Locke kill Anthony Cooper? Maybe for the same reason that he could not kill Jacob? I can't say for sure because for some reason he was able to kill Naomi. Well, she died as a result of the injury she sustained from Locke throwing a machete in her back. lol. I wonder, and this is a big stretch, that because he only mortally injured her, if that counted as killing her? Do you know what I mean?

I think it counts as the cause of her death. If someone hits another person with a car either by accident or intentionally and the person doesnt die right away but dies a few hrs later as a result of the injuries, isnt the person who hit her still accountable or is he cleared as the cause of her death?

I agree but on the same hand a case can be made that she did live for a while afterwards, walked away even, and then died later. So it is something to think about, I guess. It is just that her death was a little different in that it took a while and was not an immediate result. They made it as ambiguous as possible, didn't they? (They = TPTB)

yea its just that she was healed from her parachute landing than gtes a knife in the back. Shewas bleeding out. It seemd to have happened within a few hrs. Locke threw knife at her back during the day that night they went looking for her and she jumped on Kates back than died. Wasnt it that time frame. i dont think they were there for several days will have to rewatch that scene. But she waslaying there wit hknife in her back they all thought she was dead. they get a call from Minkowski asking jack to give the phone to Naomi he looks over he rway she is gone. They go out looking for her and it was nighttime. Thast what I remember at least. So yea he was the cause of her death LOL
