When Ben was taken to the temple after being shot by Sayeed, Richard wasn´t aware either that the smoke monster resides there or that smokie is the guy in black (who Jacob was talking to on the beach).
So smokie sees that Ben is being treated by the others and invents a story to help create his wormhole... To tell Jacob that he knows Ben to be able to kill him (Jacob). This frightens Jacob slightly, who in turn, blanks Ben, refusing ever to meet him in person which is the reason Locke (or the fake Locke) gives to Ben to kill him. This would also explain why smokie would respond to Ben´s call when the freighter people arrived.
I think smokie has been playing cat and mouse with the islands inhabitants for a long time, waiting for his moment to strike.
I think I'm following your thought but I also think it's based on a lot of assumptions (which may turn out to be the case). I'm not really convinced that Smokie is Blackshirt man from the beach but I think they are in cahoots with one another for sure.
With all of Jacob's off-island visits and touching of the Losties, I think he is guilty of playing cat and mouse as well. It's funny but the imagery of a game of chess always pops into my head. I think they've both been setting things up for a very long time and maybe even more than one time.

Yea I saw a season 6 spoiler that was heavily linked with a game of chess...
Did someone pay you to torture me?! Ahhhhhhhhh!!! I'm trying to go cold turkey on the spoilers this season. 2 months clean and sober from spoilers and I am jonezin' for a fix!!!

so, i read most of the chess thread you linked chester. its funny cause the OP, back in march, talks about ben as the pawn that was promoted. now, i would say that's locke.
That's twice today, that someone has spoke without thinking.
And just for the record, there is nothing that suggests a chess game presently out there.

I'm going to take second to give "props" to some people...
Notso and Losttime may have dissagreements, but they show absolute respect with regards to spoilers. I know this because they are deeply involved in the spoiler discussions, on a daily basis.
Chester, UP, Darkphoenix, and Hume, among others do the same.
Why should we have to bite our tongue, and others can just spout off and potentially ruin the entire series with one post?
