The Van

Any thoughts on why/how the van jumped with the Losties from 1977 to 2004? Also, does anyone recall seeing a bunch of chain, a stretcher, and other items used in episode 1 being in the van at the end of last season?

Because Hurley was leaning on it when they flashed so it traveled with him. The same thing happened during the time travel season. If you are touching it or holding it, it travels with you. And I think it is important for Hurley because he always seems to come to the rescue in a DI van!

its just funny how the van time travels with them and it has all the appropriate tools they need like 2x shovells,1 set of perfect length chains etc lol

The only way that would work is if they were physically in contact with the van when they jumped. Sayid, Hurley, Jin or Miles could all have initially been in the van. Remember that when Sawyer was holding John on a rope in the well and they flashed? Sawyer was still holding part of the rope. This is the only explanation for the van. Otherwise, it would not have been there or would have been rotted out.

As for the supplies, I would imagine that all Dharma vans would carry this type of stuff in the jungle for emergencies.

That was my point. The van travelled with them with all the supplies they would need. I need to watch the last episode from Season 5 to see if those supplies were there. The island has a way of giving people the tools they need to accomplish the mission they are on.

I just see all of the time travel as being caused by an intelligent entity as opposed to having it just be some mysterious random activity. As such, the intelligence determines exactly what they need with them when they travel through time.
