The glyphs on the temple basement wall where Ben stood to be judged by smokie always has said the island was behind or under the water. See for yourself.
SEE SEVERAL TIMES OR SEE MANY STAIRSWAYS TO SPACE BEHIND THE WATER. IN OTHER WORDS, MANY DIFFERENT WAYS TO GET TO THE ISLAND UNDER THE WATER.
I was very happy when they showed that scene. Since the bomb detonated and caused our losties to be on flight 815 again and safely land at LA X, I would only have to guess that the island sinking was also some kind of result of the bomb as well.
Hmmm... Very interesting!
Just a thought: With all the Alice in Wonderland references, maybe the island being underwater is a sort of "through the looking glass", where the looking glass = water?
Taking this a step further and theorizing, what if MiB, and the island are all ONE entity... and this entity "wants to go home". Home may be through the looking glass (underwater)! With that in mind, perhaps the whole "ALT" timeline is the "MiB wins" version.

If you think about it, the bomb could not have caused the island to sink or whatever. The island being at the bottom of the ocean has nothing to do with the Losties (They were never on the island in the new story line).
Whatever happened to the island in this new story line happened without them.
Unless of course we are not watching an alternate time-line but just a warped or bent original time-line.
I think that we are going to find out later that it doesn't really matter where the island is in the alternate timeline...it is underwater, perhaps because the incident, perhaps other reasons. The signifigance is that the island's history is slightly different than the island we have been seeing. And why do I think it won't matter, I think this alternate universe is going to be destroyed/closed/collapsed...just ended perhaps thanks to Desmond and the failsafe.
i'm all for fandom, but are all the aint's avatars necessary? I can't imagine all of you were rocking these in 06 when they only got to the nfc championship. Or what about 2000 when you relied on aaron brooks to beat the rams before losing to the giants? Or how about in 1992 when you lost to the eagles at home in the first round?
mcgarnigle, you have no frame of reference! You have no Avatar at all!
No attack on you, but I think most of the Avatars are tributes to our resident Saints fans on the forum, mostly Boutte. And also Post-Katrina forget the Cowboys, the Saints have become Americas team.
So my head has been spinning about the island being under water too. Nots, I didn't know the glyphs said that about stairs leading to an island under water. That's very interesting!
The thing that popped into my head upon a rewatch was Kate's hearing in the opening scene on the island. I think we're lead to believe her hearing is messed up after the blast but it sounds more to me like she is under water. Also, it clears up so quickly after she pops her ears and it just wouldn't work that way if it was due to the sound or concussion of the bomb going off.
Are they / were they under water on the island?

Kate's hearing made me think of Charlie after the hatch implosion. I thought it was weird that there were three other people there, but he's the only one that had hearing problems.

You're right. It does remind me of Charlie a bit. I really encourage you all to watch that scene again and listen. I can't find a clip but it sounds do much like she's under water and I would love to hear your thoughts!

I've got a history of ear infections. It reminded me of lots of fluid in the ear, which I guess sounds a lot like being under water. Thank God I don't have that problem anymore. I used to get a ruptured ear drum every couple of years from it.
