Okay so I posted about Mikhail immediately after watching the show and have been thinking about it. There is no other solution except that its a really odd coincidence.
The timelines will merge IMO, and Mikhail will get back to the island in time to kill Charlie. I need to rewatch the episode where Mikhail is talking to Rousseau. What the heck is going on? Help me, Obi Wan-Lost forum.

Mikhail!!!! I knew we'd see that Russian bastard. We see him get shot in the eye, do you all think that he came to the island after that? That would mean the sideways reality and the current reality will be intertwined somehow...now I'm confused, and I can usually wrap my head around this show.
Well, what exactly happens when you die? If he died and THEN showed up on the Island, it would lend to Richards original theory that they were all dead. Unless death in one reality leads you to jump to the other.
Okay, you may have no clue (your words), but at least this is another possibility. Good work.
I really hope that it doesn't turn out that they're all dead and this is purgatory/in between. That would be a bummer for me, but definitely a possibility.
notsolost42 just suggested in the episode thread that it's possibly three dimensions; past, present, and future.
Maybe that time line is past which some how affects the present one we have been watching.
I'll have to read those posts. But basically I'm thinking this points to the "mirror" worlds, and that things that happen in one world affect the other in a similar way....?
Mirroring is what it seems. the funny thing is that it doesn't seem one way, ie alt impacts island, or island impacts alt. Jack's appendix scar vs Mikhail's eye.
And each post in this thread is possible. Purgatory, mirrored, merging time lines. Ugh I really need to digest this episode.
The one thing I thought also possible, was that maybe Mikhail was a time bandit like Eloise and Desmond. but that seems to be the least likely.
man did they ever pick a name for this show.
i feel like i keep shaking my head faster than Im typing. lol

When you watch this show over, and you see the first scenes of Des in the hatch and Des meeting Jack in the auditorium while he's training, you will realize that this was in the works all along. The 'other life' is not the island, as we thought, its literally another life; the mirror world. Think of the scene where Des popped up in the airplane next to Jack and then disappeared. What did he say?
This is going to get spoiler-ific if I get more specific. Everyone has been saying that the simple explanations are always correct (as was the case with Black Rock and statue, etc.). All the clues are laid out there for us.
How Jacob and MiB fit in to this exactly is the big question.
