To be or not to be seduced
My optimism for the next episode has never been higher since the beginning of season 6 or more specifically after episode 8. I will do my very best to control my suspicions and leave as much truth as I can in my writings. This is not much of a theory in that we have only 6 episodes remaining. Rather, this is more of a focus on 2 key questions that I believe are being mudded down by so much irrelevant plot.
What is the island? What the island is not is a place that can be seen from a map. It has special properties that might seduce the strongest of wills. I’m not referring to the Jacob/MIB special powers, but rather its ability to hide itself from the rest of the world. This is one hell of a magic trick.
The island has been the source of intense white flashes that have not only shifted time, but place as well. It is confirmed that Time Travel exists because of the dynamic nature in pockets of energy within the island. And the only way onto the island is either by extreme chance or by calling unless you have a large lab and knew of its existence.
To find yourself on this island also requires a certain bearing at a very specific time or be at risk the possibility of losing your consciousness or even your life. The island offers portals or magnetic wormholes that can transport to specific locations around the globe.
This island could bring power/wealth/fame to any man or woman and this is what has been constantly repeating itself over and over again. The Egyptians were seduced and were presumably the first on the island but this of course can not be confirmed. They were seduced by its powers and built a statue upon it. They discovered a fountain of rejuvenation and built a temple over it. Catacombs & corridors are built around the island to aid in transportation routes. They knew of the entities on the island and built a shelter for them. This was truly a special place for the early settlers…..so whatever happened to the Egyptians? These are the questions that continue to pile up in my head as the final season progresses to a close.
The next group, which probably wasn’t the next after the earliest of settlers, was the Dharma Initiative. They of course found the powers of the island to be extremely valuable. Their experiments were scientific and they found the same pockets of energy that the earliest of settlers had once discovered. These same discoveries happen over again as a result of the continuous change of inhabitants on the island. I could think of a hundred questions that will further deploy my frustrations but I’ll see how this thing plays out in the remaining episodes. The only question I believe is left unanswered regarding the physical island itself is how it originated. Once revealed we have determined the “what” and I hope the “when” of this mysterious island.
Who are Jacob & MIB? I have no idea! Honestly, if you are faith believer you could assume they are God/Devil playing a game against each other. If you are a SCI-FI buff you may think more abstract thoughts like energies have entered these bodies, one energy being the opposite of the other. If a Mythology enthusiast you may believe it is the gods playing war on humanity. Some might even think that they are a figment of one of our main characters imagination. It could still be a number of different things with the core of these two entities still unknown.
So let’s get to what we do know. Jacob was a man and seemed like Richard, incapable of growing old. Jacob unlike Richard is allowed to die. However, the mortality of Jacob is coupled with his special ability to rejuvenate the weak, grant eternal life, and contain his nemesis that is MIB within the island.
Jacob understands the energy that exists on the island as he freely comes and goes. Jacob is the calling card for your way onto the island. Does that mean you can’t make it by chance? For the most part, Jacob is considered by most to be the good entity of his counter MIB. For the reasons why we believe MIB is bad sort of relates to the death that this entity has surrounded itself with. The killings at the temple, the mercenaries, the black rock guards, echo, and many others are examples of his treachery right?
Killing is not something that is immune to Jacob either. For all of the people he has called to the island, what about the people that have come and died. Why do the extra passengers from flight 815 have to die for the sake of the Losties or the candidates? Why do the slaves from the Black Rock need to be stabbed by the captain, and why must the Dharma group be exterminated? Are we not to assume that they were called as well?? Was it MIB who killed them…no I think not. I believe that death to both Jacob and MIB is something that is as natural as night and day. Of course that is just my assumption.
We knew that MIB wanted to kill Jacob and was successful last season in doing so. But what does that even mean. So now we have to find the next Jacob? Really? Can’t the game just be over like he suggested long ago when he spoke of progress? These two entities remind me of how many people view the world. The greatest of extremes gives meaning to the other. If we know of great happiness it is only because we have understood the greatest of sadness. How can you have the good if not for the evil. This is not only a constant struggle for the viewers to grasp but for the Losties to discover. If Jacob’s entity equals the good than we have to assume than his struggle is against his evil entity.
Let’s propose that Jacob/MIB are energies taking the form of a body. We know that protons and neutrons in the form of energy take on opposite properties, one up and one down. Their effects are different. By some flash of light, by some pocket of energy being burst these characters took form and with them their specific powers. Use the religious version where God inherits a body and battles with the Devil, it’s still good versus evil. No matter what movie, TV show, book, etc, we find the struggle contained within the plot. It matters not how the origin of these two will be told to us but rather how we are able to grasp their purpose.
Both Jacob and MIB have told us their purpose and now we are at odds to which entity stands for what device. Destiny and free will, good and evil, sadness and joy…these are the backdrops of our very existence. What we are witnessing now is the balance. I feel like it is a game of Jeopardy where we know the answer but are waiting for the question. Who came first the chicken or the egg, the island or the energy, Jacob or MIB?
In the end we fit the final pieces together and discover the purpose of the Losties returning to the island. We will know of the loophole that applies not to Desmond. We may finally see the finality of Ben and Charles. And hopefully we will find the mysterious island underwater with everything and everyone who suffered at the hands of the island returned to their time with loved ones at hand.
