Default Smoke Monster

I've read in several places that the smoke monster takes on the image of the dead. I don't know if this is confirmed or not, but it has also been related to when walt appeared to certain people like in season 2.

Info:

When Michael is captured by the others the one lady asks Michael "has Walt ever appeared in different places at once" (something like that). So this would explain how he (Walt) appeared to Shannon and Sayid when he wasn't dead. Meaning, it wasn't the smoke monster taking the form of him. Walt has some special gift?

Yes, the Walt mystery is one of the biggest letdowns in this show for a lot of people. Perhaps they saw similar properties in Walt that they saw in the Smoke monster and wanted to study in hopes of gaining a greater understanding of this creature that has been terrifying them for so long. Maybe that's why Walt was so important to the others in season 2.

Whatever extent Walt's powers were, the fact that they never fully explored this storyline is more than a bit disappointing. Unless, of course, Walt is really the one true candidate who will make a last minute appearance and take over for Jacob.

Edit - btw, fLocke did confirm that he needs the dead bodies on the island to take their shape.

Not to pick on you, because I know this is the standard explanation. But did TPTB expect the child actor to NOT physically mature over the years? That just doesn't make sense to me.

well, in the recent observations pertaining to smokey and his aversion to water it is interesting to take note that the non-dead walt appeared drenched in a strange water form.

That is an interesting observation.

As much as it pains me to talk anything 'kids of Lost' related...
I think you're right. It seems like time worked against them, and TPTB had poor planning.
