Here in the UK petrol costs about £1.35 per litre/$2.19 per litre - It regularly costs my husband over £100/$160 to fill up his car

Hehehe! As you can see petrol (along with everything else) is just ridiculously expensive in the UK.

How many miles/km does he driver per year?

My understanding is that we drive a lot compared to other countries.
12,000-15,000 miles per year.

He drives long distances for work so he does rack up a lot of miles. However, I definitely don't drive more than 10,000 miles per year and I'd agree that in general car journeys in the UK do tend to be pretty short.
