Horace Goodspeed (background)

Getting ready for the May 8th episode of LOST it features some action with Horace Goodpseed. Here's some background on Horace to catch us all up.



Horace Goodspeed was a mathematician in the DHARMA Initiative. Little is known about him so far except that he was present in Oregon on the day that Benjamin Linus was born, helped Ben's father to get a job on the Island, and was killed during the Purge. However, on the DVD commentary track for "The Man Behind the Curtain" Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse describe Horace and his companion Olivia as factoring significantly in the future "game plan" for Lost.


Before he came to the Island, Horace was driving with Olivia 32 miles outside of Portland when he came upon Roger Linus carrying Emily Linus on the side of the road, right after Ben had been prematurely born. He wanted to take Ben's dying mother to the hospital, but she died before he had the chance to.




On the island, as part of the DHARMA Initiative, Horace was involved in bringing Roger and Ben to the Island roughly ten years after Ben's birth. His DHARMA jumpsuit identified his role as "Mathematician". He also wore the Arrow logo. After a shootout with the Hostiles, Roger confronted Horace, demanding that he be paid more for such a dangerous job.



Horace was in the Barracks at the time of the Purge; he died while sitting on a bench. Ben discovered his body after coming back from having killed his father and showed his respect by closing Horace's eyes, a respect which Ben didn't pay to any of the other deceased.

Thanks! I did it for me because I can't rememebr everything and figured it'll help everyone to have background on this guy before we go into this week's episode.

In the preview he says he's been dead for 12 years - that would make Ben 22 years old. I think we're looking at a time travel issue here again.

But wasn't Ben older when the Purge happened? Or am I confusing the scene in which he killed his father?

Oh Thank God you brought this up!!!!! I've been thinking about this ever since Horace said he's been dead for 12 years!!!!! I thought I missed something somewhere and have been going in circles!!!!!

Ya XmasDVD, youre leaving out a good few years here mate.
Ben came to the island when he was ten and he killed Horace
twelve years ago, but that doesnt make Ben 22, dont forget
the years in between. Ben was considerably older when he killed
Horace. It was the 70's when he came to the island, and it was
in 1992 that he executed the Purge, so there was about another
20yrs of his life you left out there in the middle.

Ben is roughly 43.

What interests me most is that the Purge and Ben's joining of
the Others was 12yrs ago, but Alex was taken 16yrs ago. So
Ben wasn't actually the one who took her, he must have just
took her on as his own after he became the Others' leader but
still took credit for taking her also

The Alexis issue is interesting. This would make her 4 yrs old at the time of the purge. Where was she when the purge occurred? With Richerd and the others?
