Several people have asked after Alex dies, why didn't Smokey kill Keamey and his shooters? Isn't it all part of Ben losing favor with Jacob and the island? Two somewhat unexpected events all going against Ben. Can anyone think why Ben would want Smokey to rough them up as opposed to killing them?
Then we keep seeing Ben Off the island where he now seems to have more manipulative control than he did ON the island. In Kimmel's interview Cuse and Lindelof said that Smokey has "rules" for what he/she does. So does that mean that Smokey has a conscience? I always thought that part of Smokey's appeal as a terrorist was that we couldn't figure out what the heck made it zoom out and stomp people.
So now we get to see the lighter side of Smokey. Will Smokey be sitting around a campfire playing his harmonica next?
It's all part of these "rules" Ben kept talking about, and it's the same reason he can't kill Widmore. As we've already seen in the past, Smokie doesn't just go around killing people. It has injured a few people, but I believe the only instances of death we've seen were Eko and the pilot.
Yeah, that confuses me about Smokey killing Eko and also about what Smokey would have done to Locke had he been sucked down into Smokey's lair. Is Locke the only one who was pulled down like that and why Locke? Is there going to be a critical mass of rules being changed on the island? At what point do we all run amok trying to figure out The Rules?
maybe smokey is jacobs physical form on the island and with locke he was trying to retrieve him. eko went against the belief of the island and was trying to convert people (church) so he had to get rid of him.
Ben's claim to not kill INNOCENTS comes to mind here. This is a golden opportunity to destroy one of Widmore's teams. A totally non-civilian group armed to the teeth would be the opposite of innocent.
I think Ben would most certainly kill in that scenario, if he was able. He did kill Widmore's assassin (actually Sayid did).
Ben's killings in the purge may have something to do with his not being able to have Smokey kill anyone. I am remembering in the Bible that the world was destroyed by the Great Flood. In that book, God promises Noah that he will never destroy the world that way again and gives the rainbow as a sign of his promise. Maybe Ben has used up his Get Out of Jail Free passes in the killing department. The island's rules won't allow him to kill anymore, But he is awfully clever at chess, isn't he?
The only thing that i want to know is where there more members of the team that smokie did kill? We only see 4 of them alive post smokie attack and 2 of the men are helping a badly injured member. Thus i want to know did we get a full count of the team before smokie had his way with them. just a thought.

another of my hairbrained ideas to what smokie is. what if smokie is the result from the purge? a fog killed off the original dharma occupants so maybe due to the massive killing smokie was born. I believe there were faces within him so they could be the inhabitants. the reason it doesn't kill is because its ben they really want revenge on but ben controls them somehow. also thw hyragryphs (i know I can't spell) on the door that summons smokie could it mean that an ancient civilization inhabitated the island first and the reason its so hard to find is because its a floating island making it possible that it could be atlantis. just throwing a few things out there
