I was rehashing the events leading up to the O-6 leaving for the mainland and
wondering - was it really that wrong of Kate to keep Aaron? Cassidy was pretty harsh, imo, telling Kate her reasons were not as much noble as they were selfish, Jack blurted at one time the he isn't even her family...
Had I been Kate, I'd have kept Aaron for the main reason that after all they'd been through on that Island of mystery where impossible things happened and people left on the island were still in grave danger, I'd have felt like Aaron needed protection and to be with the only one(s) who could ensure that.
What are your thoughts?

Since my mind has gone kaput, I will wait to comment on Kate ending up with Aaron when I watch it again to refresh my memory on the details. I'm sure I'll have a few thoughts to add once I remeber what you're talking about!
I did just watch the end of season 1 again and the bit about Kate wanting Sawyer's spot on the raft. She said, "if I want your spot, I'll take it" and then proceeded to talk Sun into poisoning Jin's water bottle (which Michael drank instead). Sun thanked Kate for being such a good friend and trying to help her but Kate was just trying to get a spot on the raft. I thought of this instantly when I read your thread, Lockeing. I hope, upon a rewatch, Kate will have learned from her mistakes and evolved emotionally but I just can't remember the nitty.
It also reminds me of an episode of Friends where Joey challenges Phoebe to perform a completely unselfish act and she can't do it. There is always something positive you take from giving to others, even if that isn't your intention.

Wow, I remember her talking Sun into doing that but I'd either forgotten or never realized it was selfish reasons, and I have trouble thinking of Kate ever having resorted to poisoning Jin to claim a spot on the raft. That does not settle well with me, even tho I know the scene happened.
I guess from that, one can more readily see Cassidy's criticism of Kate's intentions with Aaron. Still, though, if it were me, I'd be thinking it's not over just because we got to the mainland. Between the "because you left" guilt reverberating in my head and Ben running around declaring they have to go back ... yeah, Aaron best stay put with one of us.
Anyone else?

Since I finally got caught up to the episode where Cassie tells Kate her motives were selfish, I thought I would revisit this thread. The list of details I had completely forgotten about is endless but kinda makes the rewatch a lot more fun for me! For once I'm grateful I'm a simple soul.
I don't think Kate's reason for taking Aaron in the first place was wrong or selfish in any way, shape or form but I agree with what Cassie said about Kate's reasons for keeping him being a selfish act, especially after she met Claire's mother. I believe the maternal love she had for Aaron was as strong as it would be for her own child and I also believe that giving him to Claire's Mom was a beautiful, unselfish act and quite possibly the only unselfish act Kate did up until that point. I kind of think that was the purpose in setting up the plot that way, as it demonstrated Kate's personal growth.
What fascinates me is thinking about why Claire left Aaron in the jungle in the first place. Presumably Christian encouraged her to do so but wasn't Christian really MIB at that point? Why would he want her to leave Aaron & let him leave the island? So Claire would lose her marbles and Jacob would have one less candidate? Hmmmmmm.

Claire was under the influence of MIB parading as Christian. I don't think the real Christian was ever "alive" on the Island.

The one thing that never fit into the story was Christian showing up at the hosp in LA after Jack got back there. Who was that? It wasn't the smoke monster.

Hurley saw Charlie after the return. I wonder if it was a vision of the flash-sideways world.
That's so true, Booty. I kinda thought it was associated with Hurley's visits with dead peeps too since he told Jack that he would be getting a visitor soon. I can't imagine MIB had anything to do with it since he wouldn't have wanted any candidates to come back.
