Maybe to avoid Richard and the other to use it to leave and go back to the Island.
In fact he destroyed it I think.

Wink blow a hole

To blow a hole through the wall in the chamber that leads down to a very cold dungeon where Ben can "move the island".

Which leads me to one of the shortcomings of this episode is that, it was apparent that Ben was familiar with the ice dungeon (as I call it). How did he get down there before or even how did others get down there without blowing a hole to do it ? Know what I mean??

Yes, that is why I say that he just destroys thing for another reason than getting unto that wheel.
As he and the others know all the stations very well he would know that there is another entrance.

Yeah I thought that was pretty weak, ruin the station to bust a hole in the wall?

I was thinking the same thing. Maybe from the hole in the wall at his old house?

Glad to know I wasn't the only one who thought this was weak.

As far as his knowledge, I'm sure Jacob could have made him aware of the donkey wheel- he didn't necessarily have to have been down there before. Or maybe there's a whole other set of videos. ;-)

And I suppose someone could have patched the hole from the last moving, or perhaps this was the first time that it was used- meaning that there was another way to move the island. Maybe that's what the button-pushing was all about? I know the colors were different and all that, but it was the same type of occurrence as when Desmond hit the failsafe.

Maybe when Desmond turned the key the island moved which is what caused the electromagnetic anomaly and the men at the listening station to declare that they had 'found it'....?

4 down 2 to go...

Ben knew it was cold down there, and a parka was conveniently stored nearby. I think he'd been down there before.
