There was a theory from the UK Sky One Podcast about portals linking the island and other places.
Areas like the bermuda triangle and the sahara desert seem to be areas which cause mechanical disturbances.
This would explain the dharma polar bear in tunisia and ecko's drug plane on the island. [however might go against my theory of charlotte's polar flash back actually being a flash forward]
