Default Desmond is a Terrible Prophet

Something I always wondered, and i'm sure it's been discussed, so please fill me in.

In season 3, Desmond said to Charlie that if Charlie goes down to the Looking Glass and turned off the jamming signal, Claire and the baby would get in a helicopter and get off the island. But in exchange, Charlie would die.

Is it just me, or did Charlie get seriously cheated by fate? He made the ultimate sacrifice, and Kate leaves with Aaron instead. While Claire chills with Christian in the cabin, in some wierd kind of island limbo of existence.

im not positive by any means but if i am not mistaken desmon realized at the last possible second that charlie isnt supposed to do this . and he tries to go instead but charlie competely believed he was supposed to do this and knocks des out. also i always thought desmond kinda made that story up a little .

yeah, i always hold on the the thought that at some point before the show is done, claire gets on a copter with aaron(who returns maybe) and flies on out of there and then we can look back and say"oh yeah, remember when des predicted that"

I thought that may be the case as well. He was really getting kind of "tired" of having to save Charlie. Not that he didn't want to save him still, but didn't something happen (in a flashback/forward or something?) that made Des believe that no matter what he did, Charlie was going to die?

I thought he had finally resigned himself to believing that Charlie was going to die one way or another, so he somewhat made up this story so that Charlie could go out doing something productive instead of just stepping on a wire and getting shot in the neck!

I dunno.

Actually if you wanna get really deep with this Charlie actually saves Desmonds life. Desmond was going to go down his self and then Charlie bashes him wih the paddle. 1st time he saves him because we learn that Others are waiting down below to capture or kill someone if they try and shut off the system. Desmond then awakes to dive down and save Charlie so Charlie runs to disarm the Jammer when then Penny s message comes in. Up floats patchy when Penny comes on Desmond runs Charlie slams door gerenade goes off and Charlie dies. So really Charlie is the one who gets in the way of Desmond path of death. So is Demond the one who is doomed to die now.

I always thought that maybe Desmond lied about what he saw. He really could have seen his reunion with Penny and lied to Charlie so they could be together.

I hate to be controversial but I don't think Des lied. He had to have seen what he told Charlie he saw because it was chalk full of details. Des had never been down there before and told Charlie he saw him entering a code into the keyboard below the red flashing light. He had to see it in a vision, right?

I think that he offered to take Charlie's place at the last second because he felt so much empathy for Charlie. He cared about Charlie and didn't want him to die, even though he knew it would just be delaying the inevitable.

That's my opinion anyway

I don't think des lied to charlie he might of seen Aaron in the chopper an assume it was claire holding him, or he got the days mixed up like he did at the bar with the soccer game . And charlie was the only one that could turn it off cause it was made by a musician and he is the only one what could read music.

man des really failed in the end of season 3. i never really thought about it, but you are totally right, claire doesn't get on the helicopter so what was des talking about? (unless, gasp, the writers forgot about that line). but what makes me angry is we never see des deliver charlie's letter to claire. i thought for sure he would when hurley told claire (a bit too roughly in my opinion). but he didn't

also as for desmond trying to take charlie's place at the second, i always just thought he was running because he could hear penny/charlie yelled for him. i think he was more concerned with talking to her than saving charlie

and to round out this awfully long post, why didnt charlie shut the door from the other side??? he could have easily ran out and him and desmond could both have lived. it almost seemed pointless in the end
