this is my first post, sorry if this has been talked about before.
I just thought about a possible signifigance of burying people on the island. Probably doesnt mean anything but check this out....
Neither lock, or jacks dad was burried when they were dead and came to the island. and both can now be seen. Also, im not sure about other people that died, such as ecko, charlie, etc. but maybe there is some connection about if people aren't buried they can come back to talk to people
Here is why... After Saywer killed the others that were attacking Amy, amy said they had to bury them... Also, Miles could talk to anyone that was burried on the island, such as Ben's daughter, dead soldiers, etc. and lastly, they did an entire episode about Nikki and Paulo, which ended in them being burried. For me, that was too random and made me suspicious that they're "death" and burial would have some later signifigance.
Maybe all the dharma peopel that ben killed weren't burried either, and thats why we have seen some of them come back in dreams, etc...
Just thinking out loud. Let me know if anyone can think of anything.
Nice idea, but not consistent. Boone was buried, but he has been seen by Locke. The Dharmite's were thrown into an "open" pit, but only Horace has been seen (in a dream sequence). Ben never buried his dad and left him sitting in the VW van, we have not seen him running around. Other examples: Adam and Eve, Artz (the blown-up teacher), Goodwin, Kelvin, Frogurt, Ethan, etc.
Still, there may be something to this for "special people".
I think that you came up with a good idea. Maybe there is more to it. Maybe they take the non buried to the Temple like that is maybe where they took Paul.
There's definitly something behind the theme of being buried, but remember things on this island have a way of not staying buried.
And when Amy said they had to bury the bodies, i think it was more for the sake of hiding them so richard and the Others wouldn't find it and know the truce had been breached.
Interesting idea, but I think Amy was adamant on burying the man Sawyer killed because she didn't want Richard's people to find the body, and come and seek revenge. And judging by the huge pit all the Dharma people were in, it looks like they at least attempted to bury them. But you are right, people who aren't buried on the island seem to be "come back to life".
The empty coffin made me dub Christian "OMG MEAT PUPPET!" and I can't help but think that every time I see him, even though I don't think the ghosts are actually ghosts.
Boone (buried) was seen in a dream, not as a ghost. Same with Horace (open pit).
Walt was seen even though he was alive.
Libby and Ana Lucia were buried, but Ana is seen and tells Hurley "Libby says hi."
Christian, Charlie, and now Locke are unburied and seen running around.
Ethan, Nikki and Paolo, the marshal, and Shannon are buried and have stayed that way so far.
The theory almost fits, but is inconsistent. I think the ghosts are not exactly dead. Those who are dead don't come back. I'd say this will have a time travel type explanation, rather than a supernatural one.

Technically Boone was only seen after drug use, in a dream like state. Right? But Libby was buried so that prolly debunked this theory. Good thought though! And Welcome to the boards.

It has confirmed by the producers that the Walt visions were manifestaions of smokey, so he doesnt count.
