Sawyer is lying to everyone to keep Jack, Kate and Hurley "safe".. to "save their asses". He's also lying to everyone to keep Sayid "safe", i.e. not dead.
He sits at home and reads because reading helps him think.
I couldn't help noticing the similarities to Ben... always lying, saying he's doing it to keep people safe, knowing more things than he really should know, and constantly reading.
If the show just started, with this episode, and we knew nothing about Sawyer's background, would we think he's a bad guy?
I don't know.. but for me it put Ben's behavior in a different light.
that is an interesting correlation, now that you point it out. the reading thing is interesting, Ben and Sawyer are both a little bookwormish. And the only characters who are as far as I know. Desmond had that one book, but i don't think i've seen him read anything else.

I also thought it was funny when Cheng explained to Jack why he was a "workman" because of his aptitude. Sawyer had everything to do with this and maybe Juliet too, but it was to save Jack's ass. I think Sawyer definitely has taken on some Ben-like qualities and definitely understands what it takes to be a leader and make sacrifices, which tells me that Ben may not be as bad as we all make him out to be, manipulative and mousy yes, but not that bad of a dude!

Funny you say that, i have thought for a while when Keamy was coming to kill Ben and he killed Ale,x i thought from that moment on that Ben was not necessarily "evil" but a "do whatever i have to do" kinda guy and that means getting his hands a little dirty! thanks for the welcoming!

That's about when I started shifting as well. He is really a very tragic character, in my opinion. When he tells Locke that "there are consequences to being chosen" I just about cried. It reminds me a lot of Anakin/Darth Vader. He has to look cold and remain at bay because he feels so much and knows he cannot let that get in the way of the real priority: Protecting the Island at all costs, even the people he loves.
