i have been thinkin about ideas thats could happen in the show. i then decided they should just go for it. there is a lot of christian references in the show. i then decided they should put jesus on the isalnd. this would be awesome. :-)
Someone else suggested that the island was the Garden of Eden (which, simply geographically, wouldn't work). While the show does, at times, verge on quasi-religious (Carlton Cuse's other show, The Adventures of Brisco County Jr., also sometimes ventured near such territory), I'm absolutely positive that he, the network, and anyone else with a voice would NEVER even consider such a thing. It would show a complete abdication of creativity, and be 100% certain to offend virtually everyone, Christian and non-Christian, alike. For guaranteed outrage, they could have a battle royale between Mohammad, Buddah, Amaterasu, Shiva, Christ, the different Messiah that the Jews are still waiting for, and, perhaps, Godzilla and Cthulhu, against a background of thousands of angels, demons, Devas, the island's indigenous kami, and maybe some Jedi knights blasting up the place.
No, I'm certain that no network that intends to stay on the air is going to step on a landmine like that.

Although I feel that thy do have some long term strategy for things, I also think they are winging it as they go along. For example, they had originally planned to kill off the Jack character in the first or second episode, but now he's pivotal. The actress playing Sun was originaly considered for the Kate role. She did not get it, but they then wrote the Sun storyline for her. Ben was only supposed to be a season 2 character, but altered his role also. The actress playing Ana Lucia was having too much trouble with the law, so they killed off her character. The actor playing Richard had shooting conflicts, so his character has been missing (off to the temple). So, there may be a "big picture", but the story line is constantly in flux and evolving.
of course - i mean they didnt predict the whole walt thing aswell and in an interview with naveen andrews he mentioned that he thought the writers were winging it for season 3 but i thinks thats because they were in talks over how many seasons/episodes there would be altogether.
they have an overall story but the intricacies may be prone to adaptation! as long as there is no jesus/jedi/buffy episode, thats all good with me lol!
I'm sure that they were winging it in the beginning. The commentary for The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. reveals that Carlton Cuse never decided exactly what the orbs were or what they represented; if the show had been given a better timeslot, perhaps the show would have gone on long enough for that to be fleshed out. But, now that they have committed to Lost ending after a set number of seasons, I suspect that they may have made more firm decisions about what's going on, so they can plan how to make things unfold.
another thing to destroy that idea. JESUS IS DEAD! sorry if the bluntness of that offended anyone but he is. how can a dead person be on a tv show?
Now THAT is really idiotic. Not only is the statement obviously calculated to offend people while you simultaneously claim to apologize for it, but they have dead people on TV shows ALL THE TIME!
